Ride of Silence - 2013

5/15/13: The Ride of Silence.
A free ride hosted in various cities worldwide, that aims to inform or remind motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride also honors those who have been killed or injured.

BLACK ARMBANDS ENCOURAGED

Tampa Downtown Area

Contact: Drew Hunter or Jose Menendez Distance: 11.1 Notes:
The route will be the same as the one we used last year:
http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/33670864/

It starts from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa, goes past the Tampa Police Department's headquarters, three Hillsborough County courthouses, and the County Center office building to send a strong message to local government officials that we demand safer streets for everyone. The route also passes the ghost bikes for LeRoy Collins Jr. and Diane Vega and the site where Peiter Vanvliet was killed on March 19, 2011.

Not up to riding?
You can still support the Ride of Silence -- even if you don't ride a bike. Now all our "gear" is available via the Ride of Silence Store - including framed poems, magnets, t-shirts and our special 10th anniversary jersey and socks: http://rideofsilencestore.com/

No idea I've not removed anyone in over a year, but I don't recall how meetup itself handles people not checking in, having just finished the Tour de Cure SWFL season, if a member you should have received plenty of ride announcements

I'm the one who layed out the route for tonight's Ride of Silence. For those who may be nervous about it, the same route was used for the 2011 and 2012 Tampa Rides of Silence without any incidents or problems, other than the rain that soaked the riders last year. And this year, for the 3rd year in a row, the Tampa Police Dept. will be escorting the ride.

I spoke with Tampa Police Sgt. Carl Giguere about an hour ago, and he told me that the escort will include 4 motorcycles and perhaps a patrol car, in addition to officers on bicycles.

Counting the escorts we were over 75 riders, 4 police cyclists, 4 police motorcyclists, and a patrol car. Chief Castor of the Tampa PD did us right this year!

Unable to get off work in time for this one. Any in the St. Pete area or Seminole on the Pinellas side of the bay?

Yes, Ive deleted a number of conversations from here. Don't need to get bad feeling off others or let them spread - overall just bad for the group.

Sometimes it's good to be in charge of all sides of something.

    Just let it rest.

Hi All... I will be leaving the Saint Pete Downtown area around 5:30 pm This will allow for any rush hour traffic and give us time to group up and top off the bikes at the starting point.

I can take 2 more bikers with me... from Saint Pete and Back or if you want to meet en-route. Will travel up I-275, over the Franklin. Let me know I will check back here often until 4pm tomorrow.

Your bike will not go on a rack, max bikes would be 5, Two Spots are already taken... Who's Next?

Yes... It is a very big van!

Is there anyone who can give me and my bike a lift back over to Pinellas? I can bike home from anyplace, just prefer to skip the Gandy, especially after dark. Or do you know whether there will be something similar in St. Pete or Clearwater?

Take a few more with you - biggest thing is as much participation as possible, as much publicity as possible to get the word out to riders and drivers alike that we've got to SHARE the roads not just tolerate each other from the other side of the road.

Forgive me, I am new. Does " a free ride " mean that it will not be at a proscribed pace?

    May 8, 2013

    • Drew H.

Rudy, it's part of the recommended text for the ride announcement - Free as in at no cost to anyone for hte ride itself. Speed is quite controlled, this is a relatively slow ride with the recommended pace of 9-12MPH.

Thanks for the speedy reply, Drew. That is a pace I can manage. Even if I use my hybrid. 8-)
