Film: 'Jersey Boys' @ Varsity Cineplex (Details Confirmed)

  • Jun 20, 2014 · 6:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We will be joining our friends from "Thumbs Up Theatre" group to see this film on Friday, June 20th which is opening night of the movie. Purchase your ticket early to avoid sell out if you're planning to join us.

Event Host is Karen L- You could e-mail me at [masked] with any questions/suggestions regarding this event.

Jersey Boys is a musical biography of the Four Seasons-the rise, the tough times and personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation. Far from a mere tribute concert (though it does include numbers from the popular Four Seasons songbook), Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationships at the center of the group-with a special focus on frontman Frankie Valli, the small kid with the big falsetto. In addition to following the quartet's coming of age as performers, the core of the show is how an allegiance to a code of honor learned in the streets of their native New Jersey got them through a multitude of challenges: gambling debts, Mafia threats and family disasters. Jersey Boys is a glimpse at the people behind a sound that has managed to endure for over four decades in the hearts of the public.

Wouldn't it be great to have a Mad About Movies night at the play? We could sing to our hearts content.

It was nice meeting you too Aparna. I hope you will make it out to the musical in Dec/14 with Belinda's Thumbs Up Theatre group. There will definitely be lots of sing- a-long.

Still prefer the musical version over the film. For those who enjoy the music and the songs, highly recommend you catch the musical later this December. The background story among the four members were interesting to see. Thank you everyone for coming out. Now start brush up on some James Brown music because a film about the King of Soul is on August 1st.

Thanks for the shared experience, particularly Karen our amazing host.

I wonder if this played to stereotypes of the Jersey Italian community we saw replicated in the Jersey Shore 'reality' show or reflected the actual roots of those perceptions. Of course, the 95+% of the normal (boring) population would never be captured in the media, that loves extremes.

Sandra, from the movie its Valli with an 'i'. He's still alive as his name was in the credits as a producer.

Pacing of this movie had problems.. Almost fell asleep in the first half... but the 2nd half was better (that's where all the songs were)... 2 hours 13 minutes... Overall, Meetup was well organized.. Thanks Karen for a good time

While the movie felt a bit long, and treads familiar ground in sticking with the rags to riches showbiz formula, it was nevertheless entertaining and original in places. Clint Eastwood creates a stylized vision of the 50s-60s (in polaroid-like hues), and the cast succeed in imbuing their characters with ambition, humour and occasionally a little humanity. The songs are the real stars though, and I imagine the live musical must really be something special. Thanks Karen for organizing!
