This is the one Oscar nominated film in the Best Picture category that I haven't seen yet, so it's time to cross it off my list.

Oscar Nominated: 12 Years A Slave

Movie synopsis: TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life.

A strong movie but I would not say the Oscar winner. Nice group of goers and a fun time at the Pickles.

For me the movie had some tough moments to watch and was well acted, but overall, it just didn't have that extra something that would make me pick it as an Oscar winner. I'm still going to have Nebraska and American Hustle as my top two for the ones nominated this year. Thanks everyone for coming out to the movie, and the gathering after at Pickle Barrel. I'll upload a few shots later.

I thought this movie was powerful... but agreed that some parts dragged a bit. Thanks for organizing this Phil. It was better to watch it in the theatre with a bunch of great movie lovers :)

Hi, new to this group, so have a totally novice question - do we buy the movie tickets before meeting up with Phil?

    February 24, 2014

    • Phil D

Yes, Yonge & Dundas can be quite busy, even with all of the automated ticket machines. Get there earlier and buy your ticket, so we can go in as a group on time. I'll send an email later tonight about the meetup.

You guys will enjoy many of the acting performances in this film. I predict that it will win Best Picture and deserve it.
