This majestic film version of John Gray and Eric Peterson's Governor General's Award-winning play recounts the controversial career of the legendary World War I flying ace.
Premiering in 1978, John Gray and Eric Peterson’s Governor General’s Award-winning play has become one of the most beloved and widely produced works in the Canadian theatre canon. Based on the 2010 revival by the Soulpepper Theatre, this most recent film version of the classic play features Peterson majestically reprising the title role as the legendary World War I flying ace, who was deemed “a convicted liar, a cheat … the bottom of the barrel” by his instructors at the Royal Military College but who went on to shoot down seventy-two German planes and become one of the most decorated of all Allied pilots. Reminiscing about his wartime exploits, Peterson’s aged aerial ace offers both vibrant recollections and caustic commentary, while Gray provides a critical (and tuneful) gloss on Bishop’s controversial career. “Like a fine old single malt, the story and performances have acquired greater richness and depth” (Peter Howell, The Toronto Star).
This screening is presented to commemorate Canada’s entry into World War I on August 4, 1914, and to honour those who fought in the conflict.
We are pleased to welcome Eric Peterson, Soulpepper Artistic Director Albert Schultz and Soulpepper Executive Director Leslie Lester to introduce tonight’s screening.
