Indoor Volleyball After Labor Day

From: Bob M.
Sent on: Wednesday, August 15, 2012 1:05 PM

Our Thursday/Sunday outdoor gigs will be ending after Labor Day, and many of us will be looking to play indoors for the fall/winter.  Our MAVN group has put together a list (below) of indoor options, as a public service to our fellow volleyballers.  These options are "open" groups only (2+ hrs of pick-up play, not leagues), but most of these places have league options too.

IMPORTANT:  Most of these groups are particular about their level of play, and may ask you to transfer to a lower-level group if the group coordinator/supervisor feels your skills are incompatible with the group. In the Madison area, most groups classify themselves as recreational (or "beginner"), intermediate, or power.  If you are unsure how to classify your own skills, please visit our MAVN website and download our "Standards for Intermediate-Level Play" (on the More menu, click Files).

* Two Ticks (  "Two Ticks" is a Google Group that organizes "Recreational, pickup volleyball played on and around the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison." V-ball get-togethers are announced in an email list (visit the home page cited above to subscribe), and are usually played in the UW Natatorium (Observatory Drive), sometimes at the SERF. They play most weekends, either Saturday or Sunday afternoon (sometimes both), 2-5pm (sometimes later). If you are a UW student/faculty/staff, just flash your ID at the door and get in free. If you are not, you pay $5, and you have to arrange for a "sponsor" (a student/faculty/staff) to vouch for you at the door. You can use the email list to find sponsors, or to volunteer yourself as a sponsor -- to arrange to meet at the door at a certain time.
* Pooley's Sports Bar (Madison's far E side):  Sunday afternoon open coed intermediate volleyball.  Starts Sept 30, prob noon to 3:30pm, $2/person (details subject to change, call Pooley's after mid-Sept for updated info).
* Madison Turner's ( Sundays 3-5pm, intermediate and up, $5 for non-members, or buy an annual membership for $50 (or $75 for couples) and "pre-purchase coupons" (presumably for a discounted rate).
* MSCR (Madison School-Community Recreation,  An assortment of coed open rec-level (Tues or Wed), intermediate (Mon, Wed or Thurs), and power (Mon or Thurs) groups.  Fees for Madison School District residents are about $60-70 for 15-16 weekly sessions.  Non-resident fees are 1.5 x the resident fees.  Residency is determined by school district, which does not always conform to Madison city limits (see the website for residency details).
* Fitchburg Rec Dept (  Same types of options as MSCR (but not as many), and a little cheaper.  One particularly good program is Tues nights at Stoner-Prairie school, beginning in October -- bills itself as a "power" group, but actually is more intermediate to high-intermediate (definitely NOT for beginner/rec-level players).
* McFarland Open Gym (Waubesa Intermediate School):  Intermediate level, Wed eves 6:30-9pm (Nov-March).  No registration, just $2/player on a drop-in basis.  For more info, phone[masked]-4530.
* Mt Horeb (about 16-18 mins past the Beltline) has a friendly and inexpensive Wed-night intermediate group if you don't mind the drive:  $35 for non-residents, running from Sept 12 through Christmas week.  Call[masked] for more info.
* Other area rec departments:  Monona, Middleton, Stoughton, Cross Plains, Verona, Waunakee.  Google them, find their rec-dept websites, and look over their options.
