Juhannus 2009 (Midsummer Celebration)

Here is the webpage for the event: http://blueskiesfarm....
Juhannus is a Finnish midsummer celebration. I had not heard of it before, but it sounds like a really fun event and it will be interesting to check it out. As it's hard to know exactly what to expect before we are actually there, I'm figuring on letting that float for now and keeping things flexible throughout the evening. The plan for now is to meet at the Dutch Mill Park & Ride (46 Collins Ct, Madison; near Hwy 51 and the Beltline) at 5:15pm and carpool down to Blue Skies Farm. For those who don't want to carpool or want to meet up at the farm, I will bring a turquoise blanket and spread it out in a place that is near the activites, beer, and food, but isn't too crowded at about 6pm. Suggestions for a specific location (if you're familiar with the event) would be welcome. The cost of the event is a $5 donation. Dinner is served at 6:30pm; this is a potluck, so please bring a dish to share. Trout and vegetables will be provided. There will be a bonfire at 8pm. At 9pm and 10:30pm there will be fireworks. Regarding other activities, we can decide what we want to do when we're all there; there will be farm tours, trail walks in the woods, folk music, and a sauna. The event is family-friendly.

Right now the weather forcast for Saturday predicts rain; if that is the case the event will be postponed until the next night, Sunday June 21 at the same time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate; if it looks like the event will be rained out I'll post that information.

It is really nice of the people who own the farm to have a bunch of us strangers over to celebrate the start of summer. Lots of interesting food, a bonfire with marshmallows, and great company!

This was a great idea and a great time. Food was fabulous, much better than expected, and the setting was lovely. Would have liked to have more actual Finnish stuff, like folk music, or more quiet music in general, rather than the raucous stuff they played towards the end, but Meetups has no control over that. Anyway, I would still recommend this event highly for next year.

Too bad the fireworks didn't take place. There were announcements at the beginning, but they should have announced that the fireworks were going to be cancelled - better communication. They could have announced a bit more about what was happening so people could take advantage of what was advertised.

But it was a nice event and worth going to. It was a nice idea and I am glad someone posted it. Pretty area and people were pleasant, both our group and others at the event.

It was a nice way to spend a Saturday night. Not something you can do just anytime or anywhere. Thanks for organizing Katelyn.

I really enjoy the outdoor atmosphere and the music. I liked hearing stories about the theme also.

Although this wasn't just the Meet-up folks, I probably wouldn't have gone to the event, or even known about it, without this group. Lots of fun, great food, a chance to get out in the country, farm tours, new people, etc.

Is anyone planning on bringing any children along? My daughter is six, and I think would enjoy the activities and the bonfire!

I went last year and had an amazing time! I'm out of town that day, but have an amazing time. I'm a finnish american, so it was nice to connect with others and meet new people. The beer not be the best location to meet though, because it was near the area where the food was so there was a long line and a little crowded. I would plan on meeting either just at the end of the driveway, or have someone bring a certain color blanket. It is a good idea to bring your own washable
