I aspire for my writing to be like Thomas Mann's. That is, no-genre fiction with a loose grasp on reality (bonus points for dream sequences). I also push to have philosophically and culturally exploratory works. I've been in workshops before, and I've always enjoyed the experience.
Thomas Mann, Cormac McCarthy, and George Saunders are the big three. I do enjoy a lot of writers, of course. And who doesn't love ancient literature?
I'm new to Madison, after having spent a few years in Arkansas (don't judge), and am delighted that there's a public workshop. I have an English degree, and sell jewelry to feed my writing addiction.
