Astronomy Meetup at UW Space Place

  • May 17, 2013 · 7:45 PM
  • UW Space Place (in Villager Mall)

Space Place is an outreach program of UW's Astronomy department and Friday night's event is part of their "Star Gazing" program.  Dr. Jim Lattis will give a brief introduction on what we should be looking for in all that blackness, after which we will retire to the roof to see what is out there.  (Lots and lots, I suspect.)

Space Place will be setting up telescopes, but if you own a telescope, I encourage you to bring it.  *In preparation for our future night-time, star-gazing picnic at Indian Lake (not yet scheduled), it might be a good idea to get some advice on how to get the most out of your telescope.*

The talk begins at 8pm, so let's gather a bit before that.  I've never been here before - if anyone else has, maybe you can suggest a good place to meet.

I might not stay as long as I would have in clearer skies, but I intend to at least show up for a bit.

In the past when I have been there and its been cloudy or rainy , they do an indoor computer presentation using some nifty software , depicting the sky for the exact location and what to look for.

The UW Space Place is located at 2300 S. Park Street in the Villager mall, which is just north of the Beltline Highway (Hwy 12/18). The Villager is on the west side of Park Street.
Entering the Villager, Harambee Community Health Center will be straight ahead. Turn left (south) towards MATC.

Enter through the doors marked "Atrium". Space Place is down the stairs in the lower level.

For elevator access, enter through the main door (Atrium entrance). The elevator is located just to the left near the top of the stairs.

I'm bringing binoculars. I'm always surprised how much one can see in the sky w/a good pair

The Space Place is on Park, not to far from El Pastor (good Mexican), Hookah (great Mediterranean), Edo (good Japanese), and Ichi Ban (excellent Chinese). Yes, I wear by biases on my sleeve.

This sounds great but unfortunately I have military obligations Fri-Sun this weekend. Hopefully next time.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
