Trail Construction Event! Ice Age Trail at Springfield Hill

Madison Trail Runners is now partnering with the Dane County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance to help preserve our existing trails and to contribute to the building of new trails. Along with many great trail runs, a goal of our organization is to contribute back to the excellent trail networks we have in our area. This meet up will be our first trail maintenance project. This event is related to the construction of new trail at a place called Springfield Hill. This particular winter project is prep work for construction that will occur later in the year. We will be clearing brush and have brush burns.

More details here: http://www.rei.com/event/55579/session/85796

Also, I will update with more specific information next week, when the IATA e-mails me with it.

I'm told that this project will extend into October, and will eventually involve trail and boardwalk construction.

This one-time form will cover you as a V.I.P. for all future Ice Age Trail events. Please bring the form with you when we meet at Springfield Hill. 2. Fill out the next 3 lines.
    3. Skip the “Under 18” section unless you’re responsible for an under-18 volunteer or are under 18 yourself.

Part 2: What to wear Dress appropriately in layers for working in snow and sub-freezing temperatures. We’ll be burning brush piles, therefore, it’s best to wear old clothes made of natural fibers, as synthetics like polyester and fleece are more easily damaged by airborne embers. Warm headgear, insulated gloves or mittens and sturdy, waterproof boots are a must. The work site lacks improved toilet facilities, but it permits natural and private relief (bring TP). Please remember to bring water. Also a lunch or a snack if you wish. If you’d like to roast hot dogs, brats, etc. over a fire, feel free to bring them.

Hi All, I have new details on this event. I will just copy and paste the message from Ed Spoon, the coordinator of this event, below.

His message (requires multiple messages due to length):
Thank you for volunteering to help with the Springfield Hill project! In 2014, the Ice Age Trail Alliance (IATA) plans to build 1.8 miles of Ice Age Trail and loop trail on the Springfield Hill property. FYI, an IATA Mobile Skills Crew (MSC) trail-building event is planned for Oct. 22-26, 2014 at Springfield Hill. More information about this volunteer opportunity can be found on the IATA website, www.iata.org On Saturday, February 8, we will meet at 9:00 AM and work until noon. We will begin clearing the trail corridor. We’ll cut, pile and burn red cedar, honeysuckle and prickly ash. Hand tools will be provided. Around noon, we will break for lunch. Crew leaders will stay a couple more hours into the afternoon. Anyone wishing to stay and work in the afternoon is welcome.
