BBC Sherlock and Doctor Who Xmas Episode Viewing! (50 Person Limit)

Whovians,

I have received numerous requests from group members to schedule a night or nights to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as the modern-day Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. How can we resist?! I have purchased Season 1 and 2 and each DVD has three episodes. Each episode is 90 minutes long. With the insane ending to Season Two, once you get hooked you will be dying to know just WTF happened!

In addition, there are a bunch of members who also want to watch the Doctor Who Xmas special as well since we will not have a group gathering to watch it Christmas night. Ask and you shall receive! Combo night!

I have asked my friend if we could use his HOA's community "House" and he said yes! We will occupy the entire second floor (see picture below). It cost me $50 to rent the place and I would appreciate any "donations" to cover the cost. So that night I propose the following viewing schedule:

4:00-4:30 pm: Meet and Greet

4:30-6:00 pm: Sherlock Season 1 - Episode #1

6:00-6:30 pm: Break

6:30-7:30 pm: Doctor Who Xmas Episode

7:30-8:00 pm: Break

8:00-9:30 pm: Sherlock Season 1 - Episode #2

9:30-10:00 pm: Discussion and Cleanup

As for food, we are doing a potluck night and ordering pizza. The place has a fully functioning kitchen, so if you need to heat stuff up or refrigerate or even cook, you are in luck. Please let me know what your preference would be. This will also be a BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage) night unless we do a potluck night and I'll include it for people to bring. (Update: Thanks to Jared and Genevieve, I am bring a sizable contingent of sodas. You two are excused from having to bring anything else, but if others want to bring more, please do so).

Parking is on city streets (2 hour limit) but the good news is that it expires after 6 pm. Finding a spot is not easy, but there are plenty of places to look in the vicinity and you can just walk over. Carpool if possible but not required.

That's all for now. Look forward to seeing you all that night.

Here is the recipe for my Bean Dip, as requested by a few people last night. Not sure where this originated but I've made it for a long time and it always seems to go over well at parties. It keeps well in the fridge and probably freezes well, too.

    INGREDIENTS
    2 - 16 oz cans refried beans
1 pkg. jack cheese or sharp cheddar cheese, grated (about 2 cups)
16 oz mild salsa (I use fresh cut)
4 1/2 oz. can of sliced olives, drained
4 oz can of diced green chilies, drained
1 tsp. garlic powder (forgot to add this last night...no biggie if you leave it out)
1/2 cup cilantro - I do like to add this...just take a fresh bunch and snip into the dip...but it was not in the dip from last night because I could not find any cilantro yesterday! Mix all ingredients together and heat until heated through. I nuke it, but if preferred, you should be able to do this on the stove, too, just watch it and keep the heat low.

    Enjoy!

Great to see fellow Whovians again, meet new people and share food, drink, and trivia! The only hitch was when our intrepid leader, John, posed the difficult question of the evening, "Okay Ladies, what next...Doctor Who or more Sherlock?" Lawsy, how's a gal to choose, lol? :D

I really enjoyed tonight's meetup. Great communing with other geeks, great viewing of the shows, and great food....who could ask for anything more? Oh, and the venue was really nice and thanks so much to John and everyone who helped with the food and organizing and everything!

I look forward to the next event!

I will be bringing a salad of some sort, to help balance out all the other goodies people are bringing. I will bring forks too just in case.

I am not sure whether I'll bring a popular homemade bean dip or something else from Costco but I'll know after I see what Costco and T.J.'s have. My bean dip usually gets eaten to the bottom of the big bowl of it that I make (don't know how to make a smaller quantity!). If I don't see anything interesting at the stores, I'll make and bring the dip. In any case, I'll post what I'm bringing in a few hours.

I'll bring a cheese and crackers tray. If I have the time to make it before the event, I'll also bring some tomatillo salsa.

Hi all, again if you are planning on coming to the event, please post on the site what you will be bringing for everyone to see. It is a potluck event, but I will also be ordering pizza prior to the event. If anyone else wants to order pizza, we can arrange it once you get there.

    January 23, 2014

Hi all. I just joined and thought I'd make this my first event. Can anyone tell me if a decision was made between pizza and pot luck? Or will it be a bit of both?

Guys, this cold is not giving me a break, and as this is a limited space event I don't want to selfishly hoard a spot and then not going because I'm not feeling well yet :(. I feel really sad to miss this one. Have tons of fun!

    January 23, 2014

I hope you feel better soon, Elvira. Ginger tea with honey and lemon is very soothing. :-)

I would like to carpool if possible. Coming from Escondido, but don't mind driving elsewhere for pickup. I'd help with gas, of course. As for food choices, I vote for pizza but I'm flexible and can bring something if we're going potluck.
