Doctor Who Scene It and Christmas Special Viewing Night

Thank you all for RSVPing but I need to close this now. The room can only accommodate 35 people and I want to make sure we can all fit. I don't know if everyone who has signed up will be coming but keep checking back to see if there is room. Again, please if you can't make it, please change your RSVP to no. Let someone else who can attend do so. See you all Saturday.

We finally have a place in central San Diego! Thanks to Dennis, I was able to contact the Bamboo Lounge management staff and reserve a private room for our group (see picture below). I had to push the date back a week however. If you have reserved a spot, please update if you cannot make the event. The room can only hold up to 35 people and I will limit it to that amount.

I propose the following agenda for the evening:

6:00 - 6:40 : Meet and Greet, Order Food

6:40 - 8:00 : Watch the Christmas Special (w/commercials...sorry)

8:00 - 8:15 : Break

8:15 - 10:00 : Scene It Game and Other Games

If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know. The Scene It Game will be made up of teams, so we can all get involved. The Winners will receive a small prize for all their efforts. But no...not a ride in the TARDIS.

Since this is no longer a potluck, I encourage attendees to buy food and drinks from our host. The room cost us nothing. It would be our way of saying thanks.

Thank you all and I look forward to seeing and meeting many of you on February 2nd.

John

I again want to thank everyone who made it to this event. It seems like we all had a good time and I really appreciate you taking time to attend. I'd like to keep the momentum going as much as possible and will suggest a few more in the coming months. In fact, I just posted one a little while ago...

At Saturday's event did anyone discuss an SD meetup at the Gallifrey One convention in a few weeks?

Pearl mentioned planning on having one I think

I've got tickets and I'm sure many other San Diegans do too, so a meetup should definitely be planned.

People were nice, food was good when we finally got it. Service was very spotty and slow. Found out they had no manager working that night.

Well, it dosent look like I will be able to attend. I am not expecting any $$ until next week, and I have no ride. If someone is interested in giving me a lift let me know... I MAY get my rent tonight, but doubtful.

    February 1, 2013

  • Dennis Slade J.

I'm going to come to the first 30 minutes of the Meetup. I know this means that I won't meet half of you, but it's the best I can do. I'm due at a going-away party in North County which also starts at 6pm.

    January 31, 2013

  • Jonah B.

I am also seeking a ride, although one was offered by a fellow member, I have not heard from them since. I am in South Park... no $$ for transportation or bus.

For those of you who do public transportation, Bamboo Lounge is on University at Normal, very near University & Park Blvd.

    - The 1, 10, and 11 buses all stop in front of Bamboo.
    - The 7 bus (nearest stop: University & Park) and 15 bus (nearest stop: Washington St at Lincoln Ave) are 5 minute walks to Bamboo.

    Dear Whovians,

Reminder that next Saturday will be our next gathering. Again, please check your RSVP and confirm or deny. I need to get an accurate head count the day before.

As for parking, the area does get busy so plan accordingly. I understand that the Hillcrest DMV office is just north of the restaurant and offers a place to park. There are several members who would like to attend but might need to carpool. I would appreciate if people could offer each other rides if at all possible.

Thank you all again and looking forward to next Saturday night.

Is there any way for someone to pick me up to the Doctor Who meetup event? Or at least drop me back home after it's over?

Because I may be able to bring my full suit costume of "Doctor Whooves" cosplay if someone is at least willing to pick me up from home, take me to the event and drop me back home after it over? Since with the full suit that I will be carrying to the event is heavy and I dont want to ruin it by carrying it in public trasporation (like buses or trollays). So I need to place it in someone's trunk or such, cause its abit big and I need the trunk of the car clean. I can at least help out with the gas money, if needed. Please reply back ASAP if anyone can offer carpooling.

Dennis, yes, please can you check? We need space for everyone in the private room and a large enough TV to connect the DVD player to as well.

Alex Marin, owner of the Bamboo Lounge says:
"The 26th we have a retirement party in the a gallery room. Give the meetup organizer my email and maybe we can find a perfect time for them. The gallery room can handle 35 guests plus in the room and the tv has a DVD player in there too."

Hi John, There is a great place in PB, an historic home, with plenty of parking. I checked the calendar and it looks like Sat the 26th is still vacant. Maybe you could call/email and talk to them directly about the TV?? No idea of the cost, but I am a PB resident.

It looks like there are plenty of people who want to have this event and share a night of Whovian entertainment. The date is set but the location is not. Good news is that I received the Scene It and it is awesome. I also now have a DVD player that will work with it. Fellow Whovians...we need a location! If anybody has any ideas, please let me know. The backup plan is my community center that can host everyone and has a kitchen and bathrooms. I'd like to find a central place in SD (I live in southern Rancho Bernardo). So Timelords, Timeladys and Companions, please let me know possible locations so we can finalize everything. It looks like a good time will be had by all...

Are you thinking a public place where we can reserve a room or someones house?

      January 7, 2013

Mitch, yes to both. I'm trying to find options that might work. Keep in mind that we need a TV that I can connect a DVD player to and room enough to accommodate everyone.

Update...The Doctor Who Scene It has arrived...bad news...I need a region free DVD player since mine will not work. No problem...I just ordered one. So it should all be in my hands by end of the month.

I am still trying to gather info on places to meet. Waiting on a few and hopefully I will have that pretty soon. As far as dates are concerned, I have only had a handful of people state a preference. That said, I will just pick a date and see what people think. So for now, let's shoot for Saturday, January 26 at 6 pm.

Again, if you haven't signed up, please do so. I need a good head count to ensure we get a big enough place. Besides the games and the Christmas Special, does anyone else have any suggestions for things to do? If so, please post. And get the word out to others if you can.

Take care and let's start preparing.

    December 10, 2012

  • John

Thanks to all who have responded so far. Please continue to post or email preferences on dates. I want to make sure I hear from everyone. And if you have done so already, make sure you RSVP so I can get an accurate head count.

The good news is that I've bought the Scene It and it is on the way from the UK. If anyone has any additional games, please bring them so we can have as interactive a time as possible.

Finally, we have several offers to host at various locations and I'm finding out more about each before offering them up to the group. Once I do so, I will post possible locations.

Thanks again and hope to hear from you.

    December 3, 2012

    • Thomas Q.

Do you know if it comes with the correct DVDs for our region? I only ask because I have had problems with trying to play British DVDs before

      December 4, 2012

    • John

Thomas, I'm going to find out myself. All the reviews indicated that it is a region-free DVD so they had no problems with American DVD players. Some noted problems with Macs or Blue-Ray players however.

      December 6, 2012

  • John

To everyone that has signed up...thank you. The original purpose of the post was to see if anyone was interested in getting together for an evening of Doctor Who shenanigans...and it sure looks like there is!

Since there is interest, the next step is to get a hold of our leader, Madam President Kristine, but date I've had no luck. If I can't get a hold of her, we will move forward and plan it all out then on our own.

I imagine the next step would be to look at dates in January. I was thinking either a Friday night or Saturday. I suggest the following: JAN 11 (Fri), 12 (Sat), 18 (Fri), 19 (Sat), 25 (Fri) or 26 (Sat).

For all of you that posted, let me know (message here or email) which dates work best for you. I know that not every date is going to work for everyone, so I will try to see when the best turnout will be and let everyone know. If you can, get the word out to other members.

Thanks all and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi John, I'm in, but prefer to stay in San Diego vs North or East Cty. I live in PB. i have access to a public room. What sort of screen is needed to Host?

    November 30, 2012

  • John

Continuing the thread...I did receive some emails with questions. Sorry it took so long to respond, but I'm taking it one step at a time. Once we select a date, we can then discuss locations, food and entertainment.

The hard part with findings a public place is that we will not be able to give them an exact number or place a deposit. Kristine and I have talked about this in the past and so far we have had no luck finding a solution.

Christina, thanks for offering to host. We may need to take you up on the offer. I live in a condo complex and we have a large community center that could easily hold 50 people and has a kitchen, so that is another option.

I think that viewing the Christmas special and playing Scene It (if I can get it) might be enough for one day. But Ahmed, by all means, bring the card game. The more Doctor Who games, the better!

My goal is bring as many members together, socialize and argue about everything Doctor Who. If that sounds good, let me know.

It depend on what John says or such on where or when. But, a viewing party is always a good idea for the Christmas special.
Any good places or anyone willing to lend there place to watch it and have a potluck too? That will help greatly. Also, we need a carpool sheet up, cause we may need people to carpool because I know that someone like myself will need a ride back home if it becomes very dark to get back home, since I too take the buses and such.

    November 28, 2012
