#4 Magento Meetup

Guys,

So here's to kicking off the #4 Melbourne Magento Meetup :)

Salsa Digital have let us use their offices for this meetup (thank you!)  and I'll have more information soon on the details of the evening.

Can you try to keep the date free and I'll update you all soon!

Once again we are looking for someone to do a short informal presentation on what they are currently working on (doesn't have to be technical) and hopefully a Questions and Answers session.

Give me an email if you have any questions!

Enjoyed it, particularly the discussions about what exactly it is that digital agencies are selling these days and the idea of an ongoing retainer model.

Plus, lots of good Magento info that'll come in handy with our website rebuild!

Will be good to catch you at the next meetup!

Agreed that noisy pub isn't good, it definitely wants a function room etc.

I'll do a ring around, let's talk about this at the next meetup. See you all there!

    Hey Peter,

I'm encouraging presentations purely so that we can get a mix of people to attend more than just tech heads (which is cool, but I want people to feel that its a not a necessity to be overly technical :))

Ah ha! Where have you been! lol :) If you are able to organise a venue for the future that would be cool!

Hopefully see you at this Meetup!

Hey Chris, fair enough. This is just my take on it, I guess I'm less interested in presentations and more into spending the time chatting to people. I konw one isn't at the complete expense of the other, but still, it's nice to get away from projectors and fluorescent lights every now and then!

What about getting a pub with a function room for next time, most places happily give you a free space if you bring a group of thirsty and hungry people. What do you think, Chris, Jan?

Commercial Club in Fitzroy has plenty of space, which can be reserved
Union Club on Gore St has function space
If more towards Carlton pretty much every Uni pub has function space

I'm happy to contact places, assuming a date some time early December before everything gets too crazy?

Hey Peter, if I can chip in here, we tried the pub thing and to be honest it was noisy and difficult to have any kind of a meaningful conversation. These things are a bit of a geekfest, so it's generally a great time to discuss issues and everyone tends to share freely in a very informal atmosphere. The conversation typically focuses on Magento and its vagaries and the emphases is on sharing information and supporting each other - as any user group should. Often someone does a presentation of some aspect they have been working on and it always sparks lots of lively Q&A

Come along to the next one and see for yourself.

    Cheers,

    Mike

One thing worth mentioning, that we always ask the Agencies to supply beer and they generally seem more than happy to do so :)

The meetups are very casual and aren't "office" orientated and we tend to go for a beer afterwards.

    Hi Peter,

It's a fair enough question, but the reality of running the meetup at a pub (that doesn't have free space for us to use) is that they are simply too noisy and don't have the facilities for us to present in.

I have search high and low for a venue that would offer us the facilities that we need (for free) and I can't find anywhere :(

To get over the commercial feel I make an effort to go to a different agency every meetup so that there is no "favouritism" or some sort of business opportunities related to hosting. It also a good way of getting people from other businesses to involve themselves in the group.

That said, Peter if you know of good venues for the what we want to do then please email so I can get it organised for next time :)

    Hi All,

Just a suggestion, but how does everyone feel about having meetups in corporate offices? It's great of Salsa to volunteer space, but I wonder whether it doesn't just give it an overly commercial feel. If we do need space to give presentations, what would people say to at least having pre-drinks in a bar or pub, where people have more opportunity to mingle? Then whoever wants to continue to the presentation part can if they want.

I've been overseas, so I've missed the last few meetups, but other than being crowded I think the feel of the first meetup was something to strive for - in a pub, everyone can have a drink or a meal and so on.

Plus most of us probably spend enough time in offices!

    Cheers,
    Peter
