OCTOBER MAIN LINE WRITERS GROUP - CRITIQUE

The OCTOBER Main Line Writers Group meeting is Critique Night! Get constructive feedback on your current writing projects by other members of the group.

You don't have to bring anything to the group if you don't wish to do so. You can participate by offering feedback on those who do bring pieces for critique and are welcomed to do so. Approximately one half to two thirds of the people participating bring pieces for critique.

If you do wish to have a piece critiqued, PLEASE FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES: - Bring a piece or excerpt from a piece approximately 5 pages long - Please bring ten copies, double spaced and typed. We need to break into smaller groups to ensure that all pieces get a reasonable amount of time for reading and reviewing.

Our meeting place is Michael's Restaurant Deli in King of Prussia, just north of The King of Prussia Mall on Rt 202. The address is 130 Town Center Road in King of Prussia,[masked]-3265. The meeting officially starts at 7:00 pm but many of us come early (around 6) to eat and socialize a bit - but you can order your meal at any time during the meeting. We use a private room and the acoustics are great. You'll have no problem hearing our speakers or each other.

Just a reminder that you can order a scrumptious meal at Michael's off their extensive menu. We don't get charged for the great room, but Michaels does have the expectation that attendees will order a meal. It is a fair expectation and the meals are very reasonably priced.

Mark your calendar for every third Wednesday of the month. Feel free to tell others and bring a friend or two.

As usual, any questions, please contact me, Gary Zenker, at[masked] or [masked]. We are all looking forward to seeing you there.

Though I was tempted to turn and scoot on out upon first stepping into the room and catching sight of all the intimidating faces and their upbeat chatter, I'm just thankful that the Lord did prove yet again faithful in guiding me over to my seat and in dispensing of the daunting cloak of uncertainty that had been vying to smother me. Just encouraging getting people to meet and share some time with inspiring and like-minded people.

I was in a critique group of talented writers who each shared their own style of writing which is always a treat ,though other talented writers shared the tricks of the trade. ( halloween pun intended...lol.

Critique night is always exciting. This time a bunch of new voices and new ideas. And I always learn from listening to how other people go about the business of critique. Great meeting!

For a first timer, I was electrified by the end of the meeting. The nerves driving my mind in circles at the beginning of the meeting, gave way to excitement to actually share my writing. I can't wait for the next meeting! Thank you for being such a great and welcoming group!

Electrified. Hopefully no suffering from any burns.

I am impressed with the overall friendliness of the group. Everyone I have met so far at the two meetings I have attended has done nothing but make me feel welcome. The first time critique of something I had written wasn't nearly as painful as I had feared. I sense there is no hidden agenda and that all suggestions given are to help me be a better writer. Often not trusting my own judgment when it comes to my writing, I welcome all the help I can get.

The only problem with these meetings is that I leave so full of energy that I can't get to sleep!! Thanks everyone!

Great night. Loved the new people, as well as seeing established friends. Maybe next time we could go back to having slightly smaller groups. Two people in our group did not get to read their pieces. In addition, people had to speak louder to enable the larger spread out group to hear, thus creating too much overall noise making it difficult to concentrate. Maybe ours was a quieter group. So I would love to go back to the previous format of more and smaller groups. But as usual a dynamic evening not to miss!!!!!

Thanks for voicing the issue in a positive light!

I agree. We could have used one more break-out group last night as everyone had so much great feedback to share! (It's a good problem!)

Even though I didn't bring anything myself this time, as always I learned alot from hearing the other writers' works in progress and the thoughtful and constructive comments of others in our group. I always walk away from meetings of this group feeling energized about my own work.

Being able to read samples of talented writers' works is like going on a taste tour of a chocolate factory! Different tastes, all good in their own way. Thank you to all the very brave writers who bring their work and all the members who offer critique in a positive, caring atmosphere. You all make me proud to be a member.

Going to try the drive. It's a pretty good hike from Havre de Grace, MD, but I'm curious about the group and would like some feedback as well, if you don't mind the audacity of a newbie showing up with pages in hand. :-)

I spent a sleepless night regretting voicing my fears. Wayne and Carol's kinds words of encouragement are exactly what I needed to hear. Words now fail me, because I can't thank you enough.

Gary, please join us. Have faith in your skills and your goals. No one group can be everything, but groups like these will help you hone your skills and offer insights (among which are that many of us have the same feelings...even those who have been published)

      September 27, 2013

    • Gary Buehler, S.

I truly appreciate your welcoming encouragement. Putting my insecurities aside I do plan on being at the October meeting with copies of something I have written for critiquing. Stealing a line from Casablanca hopefully "this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship" all my fears are unnecessary and just a big waste of time.

      September 30, 2013

  • Gary Buehler, S.

I know joining the group is in my best interest, but with all my self doubts and insecurities am not sure I belong. My friends who have more faith in me than I have in myself say I have nothing to worry about. Hopefully they are right.

Every writer has doubts, Gary. We're an easy-to-get-along-with group. The only way to know if this is the right group for you is to come by!

      1 · September 14, 2013

    • Carol

Oh my Gosh, Gary, please do come out! I have to echo Wayne (Tony), that every writer out there has doubts. I can assure you this is one of the nicest and most supportive groups I belong to. Never have I heard a harsh word during a critique session. Look forward to meeting you.
