5th Anniversary coming up! PLEASE READ

Hello Writers!

January is coming up and will mark the group's 5th Anniversary. That milestone is a great opportunity to take stock on what we have accomplished and what comes next:

  • We've met monthly for five years, missing (I think) just one meeting one summer
  • In addition to the regular meetings, we've held long format critiques to help attendees get more feedback on their writing
  • We've hosted talented speakers who have educated us on all sorts of writing, on query letters, stand-up comedy, script writing, memoir, and general fiction
  • Our talented presenters have also educated us on plotting, self-editing and character development.
  • Our own members have contributed to panel discussions on software tools and self-publishing
  • We've published our first compilation volume, Unclaimed Baggage: Voices of the Main Line Writers and held a very successful launch party
  • We've set up an attractive web site for the benefit of those checking out our group and to help promote members as writers.

I think we have a pretty good record of value and focus on the membership.

Managing the group requires a significant amount of time and funding. The funds from membership fees go to a variety of items that support the group, including: MeetUp administrator fees, web site hosting fees, meals for guest speakers, printing paper and ink/toner, name tag blanks, banner and signage, other support items, etc. You wouldn't believe how fast it all adds up.

As a membership organization, I am asking you to ensure that you play your part by maintaining a current membership. The 2014 annual dues are $30 which comes to less than $3 a meeting. You'll spend more on a Starbucks coffee. You can now pay your membership on line through meetup or you can pay at any meeting. If you renew before December 31, it's $30 online but $25 if you make payment at a meeting. After December 31, membership will be $30 in person and $35 online.

We invite all those interested in the group to "take us for a spin for a meeting or two" but after that, we expect that if you are going to attend, that you join as a dues-paying member. If you've already taken your "spin", it's time to become a member.

So if you see a "pay dues" button on the left side, I believe your membership is due for renewal (I don;t think you can see it if your membership is up-to-date). We'll bring a list to the meetings so if you are unsure, we can tell you. And I will be sending specific notices to remind you on your membership status shortly.

I thank you so much for making the group one of your homes for writing and look forward to taking the group to the next level as a resource for your writing life.

All the best,
