Get This Party Started!

Hello All! I've recently taken over this Meet-up group and I'd like to see it become healthy and active again. Let's get together and discuss how we can do that. I have a few ideas that I'd like to share with you and I'd like to hear your ideas as well, what would you like to do with this group? What are your interests? Let's talk!

UCI charges for parking. $2 an hour up to $10 for the day, the Beall closes at 8pm so we have to be done by then.

relevant articel today on wsj on making gadgets. this is fun and wacky. check out the video on making a useless thing. this would be a cool project that has no purpose other than to turn itself off. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323628804578348572687608806.html#articleTabs%3Dvideo

Regarding the projects brainstorming session, given the number of people in the group maybe two projects could be worked on in parallel rather that just one?

    1 · March 8, 2013

    • bequi

And the answer is, yes! We explored the idea of breaking up into several groups and either working on individual projects or working on different parts of a larger project.

      March 8, 2013

    • Arn

yeah, I was gonna say, doing just one project wil create a lot of inefficiencies, and there will definitely be some people that will feel left out. Maybe the groups should be small enough that everyone can contribute, but there should still be some way of cross pollinating ideas across groups..

      March 13, 2013

  • David P.

    - We need to run some Facebook advertising to let people know about the group. (I'm happy to pay for that as we want to get as much expertise in the group as possible.)

    - The next group we could each pitch ideas and gauge (show of hands) the level of interest from the group, then consider workloads, tools and materials needed for each idea. One idea (hopefully) will fit the group well. It's perfectly OK to pitch ideas from MAKE magazine.

    - With a Meta goal of doubling the OC Maker Faire attendance, we need to have a Google Hangout to brainstorm that. It's basically a marketing challenge and we discussed things like the Burning Man email list. Maybe the main Maker Faire could also announce it, maybe local universities could announce it. We can also tweet and do social marketing on Facebook. We could make flyers for the hobby/tool shops in the area etc.

    March 7, 2013

    • Tim L.

I have a list I've gathered few weeks ago of all the major players in the industry, but this was just for me, perhaps we can consider inviting key players to the event like what you've suggested for Christ Anderson... or do a banner exchange on their website.

      March 8, 2013

    • bequi

I appreciate you thinking about OCMMF and ways to help get the word out, thank you David. My team does have some marketing ideas that we're working on. Also, I already have a Facebook page, Twitter and Google+ accounts as well as a website. All sponsors that we plan on approaching must first be presented to Make Media for their information. Make already advertises OCMMF on their website and we are allowed to submit blog posts for them to put on their website as well (with their approval of course).

      March 8, 2013

  • David P.

    - We should think hard about sponsorships for the OC Maker Faire as that's where your bigger marketing dollars come from. (Billboards/TV advertising.)

    - We could consider a silent auction as this is a non-profit. There are organizations we might be able to use for that. We could also add cool 3D printed sculptures, ShopBot furniture etc. (More marketing money.)

    - We should work out what instructors we have. Who can teach what to the group, and when? (ShopBot / Welding / 3D Printing / Laser Cutting / Robotics / Arduino Building / Pancake making etc.) That would begin a calendar.

    - Once we get everything running smoothly (attendance up) we can invite people like Chris Anderson (Maker Book) to come and speak to the group.

    - What have I missed?

    1 · March 7, 2013

    • Tim L.

      - We can consider partnering with existing industry publications (ie. magazines, websites), I had some experience in the past with this.

      March 8, 2013

    • bequi

FYI~ OCMMF is NOT a non-profit. I had to create Madly Making Orange LLC in order to sign the licensing agreement with Make Media. In the future we may or may not become a non-profit, that is in discussion right now.

If I don't make it to this event would someone be willing to talk about the OC Mini Maker Faire and invite people to come? Thanks in advance! I can bring more cards next week for you to take along and pass out.

Just some notes... Future OC Make Meeting Ideas

    - Need to get decent name badges (including symbols like "electronics", "programming", "artistic" etc.) Maybe symbol fills up based on your experience level? We need an artist in the group that can design and make them.

    - Need everyone to put clear photos (not your cat) in the meet-up group and update their bios. (So we can get to know you and manage growth better.)

    - Need to have a small voluntary fund to cover pizza, drinks, BEER? I'm happy to initially seed-fund this, but we need a volunteer that has time to make sure there are food/drinks at each event.

    - We need to choose spaces with chairs or beanbags and the bigger the white board, the better. I have a portable projector if that's needed.

    - We need a Google discussion group started/managed and use it for hangouts. Someone needs to take point on that.

Note: ran out of posing space... will break up this post...

I am pretty Daft with Adobe Illustrator, I would be willing to cut some designs. All the laser people in the house could ablate symbols/names on some anodized aluminum.. this could be a great excuse to have a meetup event to introduce laser technology (hint, hint).

You are a veritable font of ideas, David! I love it! I can pitch in with the beer & snacks fund and am willing to be the pick up person on the occasions that I make it to the meet-ups. It's not a bad idea to take turns bringing snacks. We had chairs available at the Beall, Sam offered them but, no one took her up on it. Later I think we all regretted it, I know I did.

Thanks for the offer, yes that would be great. What would you like to bring?

      March 5, 2013

Seems like the cross streets in front of the parking lot are: West Peltason and Pereira. The map link above doesn't seem to take me to the right place?

    March 4, 2013

Wow, you're right, David. It posted automatically when I typed in the location. OK, try it now I think I fixed it. I will also add a link to the directions that the Beall has on their website. Thanks for pointing that out.

We hope to discuss projects and how this group will be run at the meeting on March 7th. Building a 3D printer is a great idea, I look forward to you sharing it with us.

    February 16, 2013

  • Paul O.

As far as a workshop/makerspace is there a place in mind?

    February 11, 2013

    • Paul O.

Well if the group/projects are small we can use my home workshop . I have a few shop tools that need to be used more. Table saw/routers/laser cutter/3d printer.

      February 11, 2013

    • bequi

Nice! Yes, let's talk about that possibility when we meet. The Beall is an art space and any and all tools we need would have to be brought in. The alternative is my house in Huntington Beach but, I don't have any of the great tools you do so, again, most tools would need to be brought in. Thanks!

Hi Bequi, interested. Would prefer a weekend meetup though. parking fee, ok with us since it would also mean the meetup would be closer to us. :=)

    1 · February 7, 2013

    • bequi

I understand, Joanne, and I will try to make at least some of the Meet-ups on the weekend. Unfortunately, weekends are very hard for me. Finding the middle ground can be difficult but, we'll try.

I added a bit about parking fees late, how do you feel about it?

      February 6, 2013

    • Paul O.

not worried about spending a few bucks on parking.

      1 · February 7, 2013

  • Brian J.

I'd be interested, and can possibly bring a friend or two.... I just have to make sure I have money for parking first (currently unemployed). Also, I'm a beginner (have some background and experience)... does that matter?

    1 · February 6, 2013

    • bequi

All ages and levels welcome, Brian! I understand about the parking, which is why I'm presenting it to the group for discussion. If there are only a few people (15 or less) we might just meet at my house in Huntington Beach. Free parking here! Alternatively, maybe you and your friends can carpool and split the parking fee?
