Food&Flix : Between The Folds

Our first F&F : 5:30-8:00 Potluck and socializing.  Meet local origami artist Ben Parker, who will lead an origami class and club at MakeHartford. New Meetup listings will be posted soon for for his folding class&club and have been posted for Deb's new "String Thing" Tues 2/4 . Homebrewers may bring samples & post in comments,  for sharing in preparation for our upcoming brew MH group.

8:00-9:00 Movie: Between the Folds webpage and Trailer

Mind-boggling work from origami artists around the world. And Ben Parker right here in Hartford.

Please, BYO plate, silverware, and beverages to help make this a zero waste event. We have a microwave at MH. See comments below for food, brew to bring & taste, and notes.

Please, contact us if you can help and make these F&F a regular and fun event. We need to make our HDTVs work and to make our sound system. Help/donations for A/V install and upgrade will be rewarding. DVD, movies, ideas and alternate future hosts for upcoming F&F social nights will make this work well. This can be better and cheaper than just going out to the movies or just   going to dinner because, uniquely, we can do more at MakeHartford .

Nothing better than an evening spent in the company of fascinating people who are fully engaged in life.

    Good Stuff!
I think I left an oversized white mug there. I don't see it here. If someone finds it, please let me know. It has sentimental value.

It's definitely still there, Steve. I know the space will be open Tues. and Wed. evenings this wk, if you want to swing by.

Check out the Urbanminers on FB or their website - these are the lab cabinets I was mentioning, that could be turned into storage (better for some things than gym lockers) and could be installed under table tops. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=726674627373020&set=a.191890507518104.44815.178869128820242&type=1&theater

Very interesting film, definitely encouraging me to attend the Origami Club meetings. Also interesting food and good conversation.

I hope that the table did not come over as a donation. It is much too useful for me. (-:

I could easily depart with the screen (Hanging, Pull down, concealed/protected when not in use as a trade so to speak.

I will probably be there at 5:00 or so...

Talking of Flix, I have a Sony "Super Bright" 3 gun projector on a roller cart and a 12'x5' retractable screen that needs a new home. I am not totally sold on donating them but am open to suggestions.

Thinking through my fingers here, I have periodic use for a 3' break and a 3' shear. ( 4' and 4' would be even better.) Devices that I am sure would be of use to others. If the group can arrange to get these, I would be happy to donate the projector and screen. Screen available separately if wanted.

If I can get someone to repair it, I have a 3'x12' wood table that folds down to 4"(!) thick and I can lend for use. It is an ingenious creation. One leaf needs to be reattached to the piano hinge. It will take about 24 short nails. P.S. Does anyone know where I can purchase sheets of lexan? For now, I have need for three pieces: 32x32, 37x24, and 41x31 (3/23 or so thick.)

I will want to make this F&F a series so your donations will be well used for these F&F and other MH A/V presentions. Table bring if now or later - we can talk about today but Margo is exactly correct , we will probably want that here too and will fix it.

Steve - Thank you for such thoughts and donations! Sharing is how a Co-op MakerSpace works. You are perfect. I am in our MH space right now and I just patched together our first MH movie system. Our Flix plays and A/V works! It is always good to get A/V tested before performance. We can talk more about your donations when you come. Bring what you can as an option and/or improvement particularly needed perhaps today ... => #1 SCREEN ( how to hang? Or stand ?) , and #2 projector ( we have a primitive loaner working today but may want to improve? ). But if this is too late for bringing things today, we can do dongations and improvements later. I got the movie playing here and now. Works!

I'm unable to make it only because I must get up early the next morning, I'm very tired now & have a more than full day Saturday. I must ask a question & give you some information. In order to attend this event, do I have to be a member of the MEETUP Group and/or a paying member of MakeHartford itself? The same question applies to the info because some groups do NOT let you help them unless you're a member. I have access to a Web app that can be used to help increase the productivity of the group & members. In the near future I'll be contacting Steve and/or Dave to see if MakeHartford can help test and enhance it. Basically, it'll help people to know about other people better & faster besides helping people find jobs, employers find employees, entrepreneurs find collaborators, help people help people "Enhance the Quality of Life" & help stabilize the economy, help make the world a better place to live & have healthier people with healthier businesses on a healthier planet.

Hey, Margo, that roasted carrot dish sounds delicious, and, as a vegan who loves that caramelized flavor, I'd be more than happy if you made it with feta on the side. Thanks for thinking of that option! And, thanks for providing the link to the recipe. I have some fresh organic parsley - I could bring a small container of it, minced and ready to toss on top.

The parsley would be great, as I don't have any right now although I may swing by Urban Oaks on Saturday. I'll use the jam to be sure the cheeseless version is vegan.

I will bring a broccoli and cauliflower salad with creamy Asian dressing (raw vegan dish).

No need to modify for my sake, Margo. I try to eat mostly raw vegan, but I'm not hardcore about it (wish I was better about it, actually!) and would happily munch just about anything that shows up. Make whatever you want to make and it will be appreciated!

      January 29, 2014

    • Margo L.

Thanks for letting me know, Debbie. I'll use the honey the recipe calls for; the vegan alternate is a spoonful of apple jam from my CSA. I leave off the cheese for people to add as they wish, you never know who can't do dairy.

I will bring a large crock pot of spicy (but not too hot...) meat-free chili loaded with peppers and onion and beans.

I actually eat less meat in the winter, Dave, for some reason. And I can bring some home-brewed (so to speak) hot sauce to add to anything if people want a bit more warmth. I might also bring chips and hummus for movie munchies if nobody is doing something of that sort.

      January 28, 2014

    • DaveR

Mmmm , hummus ! Home brewed sauce too. Thx , lucky us. And glad that we can accommodate various tastes. I may put some of that spice with the hummus. I can do chips but let us wait to see what else the MH brings to us. Popcorn is so movie theater. Except that kettle corn . . Any MH kettle folks out there? We have lots of that ordinary commercial baggie popcorn in the space. Enough to last for many features. Lucky us.

I can bring some extra flatware and plates if that would help. Also, should we indicate what we are bringing or whether it is a main/side so we get some balance? I had a friend ban bringing fried chicken to any potluck at her house without prior approval after one overload experience.

    1 · January 28, 2014

    • Debbie

Fried chicken overload? I do not think that is possible, but I would be happy to try. :-)

      1 · January 28, 2014

    • DaveR

Margo , thanks for the flatware offer. we can modulate that according to "yes" RSVPs. Deb & I will probably bring our own. I am not certain how much brew we will have , none yet but we will see. I am just a taster not a drinker.
