MakeHartford.com is Hartford's first and only community of artists, technologists, and entrepreneurs for hands-on innovation. Where minds create matter .A community of minds in motion with our own meeting/making place in downtown Hartford.
We are starting and growing a Hartford "MakerSpace" , DIY or DITogether, "HackerSpace" ( for def. see hackerspaces.org for the global "maker" movement , groups meeting with makerfaire.com, with "MAKE" as maker magazine in library or as makezine.com ). We are a collaborative/peer-to-peer community for creating and innovating - ArtSpace , CraftSpace, CodeSpace, some Co-WorkingSpace and some perhaps - StartupSpace.
July : We have some legal status/entity/accounts/organization. Just starting, we are gathering funds to lease a space. We agree on a location. We are just starting/hoping to get a lease for a downtown space under/behind block with City Steam (a bar) with more access for founding & leasing members. We are arranging a fundraiser and kickstarter. Meet with us and let know if you have something to show or contribute as a booth or group, or need space.
Some activities/meetings will be free ( meetups ! classes etc. ). Also 24/7 keyed additional access will be for lease-paying and safety/tool-trained members. We hope to accommodate all including starving makers and like minded groups ( developers/innovator/craft meetings/classes ) as best we can.
To get started and continuing, we will appreciate (*we need ! * ) any and all help/contributions to help lease ($$) and equip ($$) our cooperative space, which will be new and unique in Hartford. Right now we are just starting & hoping to lease and fill an empty workshop room, class/meeting room, make calendar of events, classes, and create blogs/tweets etc . All help is appreciated. Sharing is the way to make it happen.
A MakerSpace is a cooperative workshop, meeting place, shared space to make, to learn, and to Co-Operate. We share tools and know-how. DIY or together. Lets get out of our garages, studios, meetups at bars, and temporary spaces. A permanent place to share a drill press ( instead of each of us having separate tools and space) and much more.
Other nearby cites have MakerSpaces (MakeHaven.org, Nesit.net, CTHackerspace.com, see red squares mapped as MakeHartford.org ) , We want to find and make physical workshop, and to schedule and to gather a group IN HARTFORD AREA. There are many of these hackerspaces in an hour's drive in other nearby cities. But none right here, IN HARTFORD . We need it here, so we can spend more time making and fewer hours driving. Who wants to spend more hours driving/commuting than making?
We will have a downtown Harford space we can "walk to" or 'bike to" rather than "drive to". ( like ... to AS220.org in Provid. RI or similar spaces in NYC, Boston etc. ) . Parking will be a bit of a problem but we are working on that issue. Comes with the territory, IN HARTFORD. Parking problems come with any downtown location in any real city. At our meters downtown, parking is free after 6 PM. We could have always free parking elsewhere - out in the boonies and suburbs but we prefer downtown location for closest central access to "ALL/Most" members and guests ( for "ALL/Most" see old member blue/brown/grey flags on map at MakeHartford.org => Hartford is central . We have about twice as many potential members now. ).
We may grow to another satellite or 2nd location out of downtown ( heavy welding etc - perhaps E.Hartford ? ) but will probably keep our initial downtown central MakeHartford.com location for meetings, classes, and work that fits in a small spaces. For the current proposed location there is City Steam's craft beer upstairs and a comedy club upstairs bar , City Steam. Some even want to craft beer ourselves. This City Steam location seems worth the downtown parking hassles. Every location has some trade-offs. We think the benefits are better downtown for our proposed location. We can always find more space if we need more.
We will get together to discuss ways and means to get a real workshop location IN HARTFORD , tools, and organization. 3-D Printers, Laser cutters etc. What can we do as group and what can we share. What to make? How to make it ? Got extra tools ? Got an old workshop in your garage where you want to park the car ? Know how and want to show us? Origami, Welding .. Soldering.. Knitting ..
Some diverse Hartford groups to do this are already getting together as community spaces recently. Hartford community Groups like iHub , iQuilt, reSET, Axis901, R.A.W. etc are related and growing.
We are making a physical space where community can meet & make. IN HARTFORD.... a great old "maker" town which is just re-starting.
