3D Design & Manufacturing Class

3D Design & Manufacturing Class

Design a Lamp

Starting this Thursday EnjiGo will be holding a 5-week class on 3D design and manufacturing with a focus on building a lamp of your own design.

We'll spend three class periods on the three design tools in our space: the 3D printer, the CNC mill, and the laser cutter. You'll come away with a sense of what tools to use where, how to operate them, and how to iterate on a design until you're happy with your creation.

If you'd rather design something other than a lamp, feel free to do so! In that case, you'll be in the "advanced track" of the class and while the instructors will try to help as much as possible, you may have to solve more of the design challenges on your own--but that's part of the fun of it, right? :)

Week 1: Ideation, Sketches, Materials and Goals
Week 2: Laser Cutter
Week 3: CNC Mill
Week 4: 3D Printer
Week 5: Iteration and Wrap-up

Note: Depending on availability, we may have several instructors able to teach at a given time, in which case the laser cutter, CNC mill and 3D printer classes may be taught multiple times for smaller groups.

The class will be $100 plus the cost of materials (you will be responsible for bringing or buying materials--under $50 should be a reasonable expectation, but if you're tight on cash you can probably do it for much cheaper), or FREE for members. We'll make some recommendations for sources on the first day of class (or beforehand, on the discussion thread) so that you can get materials by the time we need them on the second week.

You can pay for the base cost of the class via Dwolla (ID:[masked]), PayPal ([masked]), or bring a check payable to EnjiGo Foundation.

Thursdays, Feb 20th to Mar 20th, 2014
7:30 PM to 9:00 PM

Duane Johnson is a software engineer and an open hardware 3D printer enthusiast since 2010.

Ian King is a designer and artist. He has owned and operated a Full Spectrum laser cutter for several years.

Kyle Mallory is a software engineer and local expert on our "CharmHigh" 3D mill.

Bill Swinyard is a hardware designer who has built 3D printers and many other shop tools.

This sounds awesome. I am super stoked for this. The prototypes you made out of cardboard were beautiful.

I'll bring the final wood edition to class. In all of its beta v.0.3 glory.

How amusing is this? The notice for this class showed up in my mailbox in between the two notices for a 3D printer purchase I just made... one from the seller, one from paypal. I checked the headers, and this was approximately an 18 second window that it snuck into. :)

And I'd love to attend this... Perhaps especially week 1. Alas, I have prior plans this Thursday... I'll have to think about whether to switch to this... unless, do you think it's likely this will be taught again, somehow? Or video-recorded, or something?

And/or, if I do miss week 1, is there a way to give myself equivalent knowledge and still come to the rest? Here's hoping!

Hey David, I think you'll still find the 3 tool classes useful if you miss the first day. If you come with an idea of what you want to build, it will be a lot easier to get into it as well. I'm glad fortune was shining on us this time! :)
