We will be exploring basic skills for brush art of calligraphy and Sumi-e. Sumi means ink in Japanese. In the first workshop, we introduced students to the simple and serene world of Japanese calligraphy (Shodo). This time, we will cover another artistic application of Sumi in Sumi-e, painting with ink. This is a casual introductory art workshop for anyone over 14 years old.
In this three hours session, students will learn basic historical and cultural background of Shodo and Sumi-e. The lecture will be minimal with focus on plenty of hands-on studio time.
First one and half hour - focused on Shodo and getting used to brush and learn how to control brushstroke. Learn how to write character 永 in different styles.
For participants from previous workshop will have different, more challenging character to practice. Second hour - focused on Sumi-e and learn how to draw beautiful bamboo and dragon. Learn how to balance positive and negative space and use contrast of ink to create desired results.
