Spend the weekend at the Maks and join us for a spring hike up to Tuckerman's bowl. You can bring your ski's, board or sled and enjoy a speedy trip down or just come to watch!
Cost: $50 for lodging ($25 per night per person), Food is on you.
Friday 4/25: Arrive at the ski club after 9:00pm, relax and meet some of the guests and members.
Saturday 4/26: We will head out around 8:00am to hike and ski. Grab breakfast on the way or use the full kitchen to cook what you bring.
*The hike is pretty steep and will be covered in snow. Bring yak tracks, crampons, micro spikes or skins on your skis to help with traction. It is always VERY packed down so snowshoes are not necessary.
This is a 6 mile round trip hike and takes 2 1/2 - 3 hours to the bowl. Bring plenty of food for snacks along the way and a nice lunch at the top. Be prepared for any weather. You never know what will happen at the top of Mount Washington. Bring many layers for full on snow storm potential! Expect a 30 degree drop on the way up. If you want to bring skis, and do not have the proper backpack, EMS rents bags to use for the day. Completely worth it to avoid jury rigging a pack! If you hike down, it takes about 2hrs (1/2hr on skis if it is open all the way!)
Once at the bowl we will stop at the lunch rocks to enjoy some food and drinks and watch the brave climbers come down the lip. If you are feeling up to the challenge, talk to the rangers about conditions and gauge your decision based on ability. WEAR A HELMET!
After enjoying the bowl for a while you can ski down the Sherburne trail, which is very manageable. I would liken it to an ungroomed blue. That being said, there could be bare spots and mud on the way down. Keep an eye out for changing conditions.
Sunday 4/27: Head to Wildcat (if it is still open) or take another hike, shop or have a nice long brunch. There are a few waterfall hikes that should be flowing nicely in the area that only take a couple hours.
WHAT TO BRING: The Makusue ski house has rooms that sleep 2-4 in bunks. Please bring a pillow, bedding, towels and toiletries that you will need for the weekend. Bring food, or plan to purchase as we will not have a chef this weekend. For images of the lodge click here.
