April Meetup: Free Money? Using the web to raise funds for your non-profit

Our April meetup will focus on fundraising for non-profits and some of the digital tools, services and techniques currently around.

From SMS giving through to crowdfunding, we'll look at their use, effectiveness and practicalities. Are they worthwhile? Or, is a charity carwash on a busy Saturday still the most effective.

Alex Budak from StartSomeGood will join us:

StartSomeGood is a platform for changemakers to transform their ideas into action and impact by giving them tools to raise funds and grow supporters.

The world is full of innovative ideas and changemakers ready to make a difference. StartSomeGood exists to help social entrepreneurs transform ideas into action and impact. StartSomeGood provides social entrepreneurs with a platform to raise start-up funds and build a community of supporters -- all in a fun, engaging and community-driven way. Our site taps into the power of the crowd, allowing social entrepreneurs to ask for small amounts of money from supporters from around the world.

Since launching in 2011, 44 ventures have raised over $270,000 on StartSomeGood.

Alex is a social entrepreneur and travel writer and the co-founder of StartSomeGood. He received a Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University and a B.A. in Geography from UCLA. He's spoken on social entrepreneurship at the White House, World Bank and leading Universities, and has written about it in The Guardian, US News and other publications.

Joining us will be Ashlie Tottle from The Charity Service - a local organsation specialising in fundraising.

Anne Strachan from Crowdfund UK, another local organisation, will also be on hand to share tips and advice on raising funds via the web.

More speakers to follow. By all means let us know if you want to speak about something.

Can't wait?

There are a couple of local worlkshops beforehand that might also be of interest:

Was a very thought provoking experience as well as using technology to include transatlantic minds!
the key message was 'fundraising through newtorks raises about 49% of funds'

Really useful talks from Ashlie and Anne, and the link up with Alex in the USA was very informative - got me thinking about peer networks.
