Our monthly get-together (Manchester Armchair Philosophers)

The regular monthly get-together of the Manchester Armchair Philosophers group.

The theme is for this month is "Is happiness important?" - very topical as 20th March is the first ever UN International Day of Happiness.

When you arrive for the meet-up, please get yourself a drink from the downstairs bar and then bring it upstairs to the function room.

If you have any questions/comments then you can leave them below,  or email me on ManchesterArmchairPhilosophers AT gmail DOT com

Any topics/themes you would like us to discuss?  All suggestions are put in a hat and chosen more or less at random (I try to keep a good mix of topics so two similar topics won't be in consecutive months).

If you aren't sure where we are,  phone me on[masked] and I will help you to find your way.

See you there,

Mary.

PS - We ask those that can afford it to make a voluntary contribution (suggested £3) to cover the fees that meet-up charge for the use of this website and the room hire.  Our group has agreed that any excess monies received will be donated to Amnesty International (AI).  AI are a human rights charity who, amongst other things, support those who live in countries which restrict the freedom of speech that we, thankfully, can take for granted at these meet-ups.

A very bouncy discussion, perhaps because our theme was happiness :-)

I also enjoyed the atmosphere of the discussion (it was my first time ) but felt that we only touched the surface of the issue. I'd like to discuss this theme more.
As I don't have enough time for a further evening meeting- would people be interested in a further day-time meeting, say, in a fortnights time? That could be week day or a weekend.

Good meetup. I was wondering is there anywhere were we can discuss things further? I have some burning questions about the topic of Happiness and just wondering if there is anywhere we can carry on talking about it? Or more specifically can I push Chris to explain for why it's important to realise that happiness can only be realised after the event therefore alluding to the fact it is part of the subconscious. Also I am coming around to the idea that Happiness is a by-product but something about that seems to be missing the big picture.

Just sent an email round, but if you didn't see it you can read it here: http://www.meetup.com/ManchesterArmchairPhilosophers/messages/boards/thread/32581362#[masked] As well as mentioning the topic for this meet-up it asks a question about the day we meet on - all views welcome.

Personally, I'd like to see a weekend meeting, rather than weeknights. I love the idea of this group, but the weeknight meetup is difficult for me, so I've not been...yet!

Can't commit 100%, but hope to be there

Hi did you get my idea for a topic?
Do we need language in order to think ?(deeply and expansively) how do words contribute to thought or lack of it !

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
