Our monthly get-together (Manchester Armchair Philosophers)

The regular monthly get-together of the Manchester Armchair Philosophers group.

The theme for this month is:

What is history?  -  Can we be objective about the past? Is history bunk? Is it written as propaganda by the winners? What about alternative histories?

The topic will be introduced by Arthur Chappell.

He has written some notes, here:

PLEASE NOTE - this will  be the last 2013 meeting - no meeting in December - we return on Tues 21st January with Amy's suggested topic of Altruism.

If you have any questions/comments then you can leave them below,  or email me on ManchesterArmchairPhilosophers AT gmail DOT com

Any topics/themes you would like us to discuss?  All suggestions are put in a hat and chosen more or less at random (I try to keep a good mix of topics so two similar topics won't be in consecutive months).

 - >  When you arrive for the meet-up, please get yourself a drink from the downstairs bar and then bring it upstairs to the function room.

We have been kindly allowed to use the function room for free on the understanding we'll buy some drinks ;-)

If you aren't sure where we are,  phone me on[masked] and I will help you to find your way.

See you there,

PS - We ask those that can afford it to make a voluntary contribution (suggested £2) to cover the fees that meet-up charge for the use of this website.  Our group has agreed that any excess monies received will be donated to Amnesty International (AI).  AI are a human rights charity who, amongst other things, support those who live in countries which restrict the freedom of speech that we, thankfully, can take for granted at these meet-ups.

Is there really any poverty in the UK? If you can afford a roof over your head, food in your belly and, within limits, decent healthcare, can you truly claim to be 'poor'? Are words like 'inequality' and 'deprivation' useful and do they really say anything about a society?

And here is the discussion review of the discussion itself – thanks everyone.

I'm doing the intro to the talk tomorrow and I've posted it online here if anyone wishes to read it before the event - I may well change some of this before we begin though - (revisionist history) http://www.bubblews.com/news/16...
