Our monthly get-together (Manchester Armchair Philosophers)

The regular monthly get-together of the Manchester Armchair Philosophers group.

The theme for this month is Justice.

We shall explore the theme with some help from Plato...

The Euthyphro - A live performance of Plato's short dialogue - Euthyphro, in which Socrates challenges the nature of justice.    If we can't define our principles, should we really act on them at all?

This will be followed by group discussion.

Performers Andy Stobirski & Arthur Chappell

If you have any questions/comments then you can leave them below,  or email me on ManchesterArmchairPhilosophers AT gmail DOT com

Any topics/themes you would like us to discuss?  All suggestions are put in a hat and chosen more or less at random (I try to keep a good mix of topics so two similar topics won't be in consecutive months).

When you arrive for the meet-up, please get yourself a drink from the downstairs bar and then bring it upstairs to the function room.

We have been kindly allowed to use the function room for free on the understanding we'll buy some drinks ;-)

If you aren't sure where we are,  phone me on[masked] and I will help you to find your way.

See you there,

PS - We ask those that can afford it to make a voluntary contribution (suggested £2) to cover the fees that meet-up charge for the use of this website.  Our group has agreed that any excess monies received will be donated to Amnesty International (AI).  AI are a human rights charity who, amongst other things, support those who live in countries which restrict the freedom of speech that we, thankfully, can take for granted at these meet-ups.

Hilarious (even if unintentional) presentation of topic yesterday.

It made me giggle in the corner. Andy's curt expression and responses to Socrates questioning seemed like he put himself in the shoes of Euthyphro. Likewise the guy who played Socrates with a haughty tone helped me to understand more the pattern of thinking the philosopher had.

In a way I could see why Socrates was forced to drink hemlock.

now when I think about it, I meant to say I found your delivery of Socrates quite a burly performance. It helped imagine how he would have looked like in his toga all them years ago, twirling on a spot deducing structures of reason perpetually.

I never saw Colombo as using the Socratic method but now I can see the connection. This is why I like coming to these meetups and re-looking at "known" things in unknown ways

That's odd, I'm sure I was booked in for this and my entry seems to have vanished?

Ironically I'm now not sure I'm going to make it. Apologies in advance if I don't.

This was to be my first meet up, but my car has broken down and can't get to you. Hope to be there next month.
