Our monthly get-together (Manchester Armchair Philosophers)

The regular monthly get-together of the Manchester Armchair Philosophers group.

The theme is for this month will be perhaps a slightly political one, and slightly smaller (more manageable?) topic:

" Should we give back the treasures and artefacts that were taken from other countries during the British Empire? Can we argue that we would look after them better then the countries we have taken them from or do we now have responsibility to give them back regardless? "

(The theme about artificial intelligence has been put back to a later date)

If you have any questions/comments then you can leave them below,  or email me on ManchesterArmchairPhilosophers AT gmail DOT com

Any topics/themes you would like us to discuss?  All suggestions are put in a hat and chosen more or less at random (I try to keep a good mix of topics so two similar topics won't be in consecutive months).

When you arrive for the meet-up, please get yourself a drink from the downstairs bar and then bring it upstairs to the function room.

We have been kindly allowed to use the function room for free on the understanding we'll buy some drinks ;-)

If you aren't sure where we are,  phone me on[masked] and I will help you to find your way.

See you there,

PS - We ask those that can afford it to make a voluntary contribution (suggested £2) to cover the fees that meet-up charge for the use of this website.  Our group has agreed that any excess monies received will be donated to Amnesty International (AI).  AI are a human rights charity who, amongst other things, support those who live in countries which restrict the freedom of speech that we, thankfully, can take for granted at these meet-ups.

I thought it was a great event but then again I did co-host it. I enjoyed the fact the topic dipped into many different aspects as opposed to one central theme. Need more!

uture suggestion for a subject: "Is there such a thing as an objective morality?". All segments of society from the religious left to libertarian right claim that there is some sort of objective morality, but does such a thing exist? If so, what is it? If not what implications does this have for our ethical conduct?

This may make a decent discussion at some stage, or a debate question could be derived from it.

Will humans ever be capable of 'understanding' the universe?

A quoted example is pooch, she trots about looking at the life of humans, traffic, cars, houses, food and water bowls, and chases the odd cat, but can she 'understand' any of it. She is limited by her pooch brain and experience.

Is it the same for humans? We sense, and super-sense with our technology, but will we ever 'understand' the whole thing? Light from the far reaches of the universe will never reach earth! Or, are we 'just exploring the extent of our ignorance'?

If science came up with a verifiable description of the whole thing, what difference would it make to the average dude on the street?

Morality - The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Swizerland, alone, cost approximately 7Billion Euros and the UK pays about £34 million pa. Last year 'they' announced the possible discovery of the 'Higgs Bosun'. Value?
