August 13, 2013 · 3:00 PMShare a Story Book You LoveMums, let's all bring a book to share with one another... We could all read our books to our kids and share our thoughts with them...
I am a Chinese Singaporean mum of two kids, staying in Simei. Kayden is 6 years old and Kaylie is coming to 2 years old. I write and speak rather well in this language. However, in my journey as a mum I realised that teaching my own mother tongue require real effort. Chinese books are not as interesting or as readily available in books, toys, TV programs and multi-media. For some reason, I may be speaking to family and friends naturally in Mandarin but would switch automatically to English when speaking to my son (as if he is foreigner…) especially when I am giving him instructions! I have met many mums with the same issues. It seems to be a common issue in Chinese Singaporean families that kids just prefer to speak in English. Even in Chinese class, kids are always conversing to one another in English. So the second time round for my daughter, I am putting in more effort to speak to her in Mandarin and I am happy that we are seeing results. As for my son, he is entering P1 next year in a school that has strong Chinese cultural and historical background. I am hoping that he would not only brush up his Chinese academically but also be able to converse more confidently in Mandarin.
I am hoping to meet SAHM mums with kids between 2-7 years old, staying in the Simei/ Tampines with a keen interest to share their learning resources and experience (even frustrations!). We could help one another create a social environment for our kids to interact in Mandarin. We could do meet-up in the playground, do crafts or share a great Chinese Story-telling session in my house or have a great outdoor photography session with our kids… Welcome any suggestions that you may have… Looking forward to meeting great mums and kids out there!
