Found this about Gombrich and his Art and Illusion which discusses everything we touched on and more.

I thought you might want to post it as a footnote for those who are interested or had thought the book was about perceptual psychology and only peripheral to the notion of art.


It ties up a lot of the loose ends. Pretty heddy and some issues do get lost without knowing something of it's critics and allies. Though art has moved on to modes that would have been barely or not widely understood as art only 40 years ago the questions and pushback that Art and Illusion was subject are still important though most of the audience for art might be unaware of the questions and the stakes...even at the professional levels as 7 Days in the Art World testified.
