What would you like to get out of the meetup?

I have been spouting variations of "I want to learn to code" and "I want to make maps" for a couple of years now. I would love for this meetup to make me make good on those things! I want to settle in on a specific project and figure out what it is I even need to learn to make it happen. I would love to connect with other newbies so we can learn together! I would also love to see what other folks are working on and what tools they are using to get a lay of the land. And to build a mapping community in general!

Do you have a map project you are working on?

I am building a map as a narrative structure for a series of research roadtrips across America called "Community Intentions." The map isn't the hard part so much as controlling how long swathes of text can be structured and viewed from a map! I am also working on a project called Muni Media Map, which is a non-traditional transit map for San Francisco with various interpretative media scattered along the routes.

Do you have any map skills you'd like to share with the group?

Mostly enthusiasm at this point, and some non-traditional forays into the subject!

What's your favorite map?

Dear Lord, I could never choose a favorite, but here are two that have blown my mind in the last couple of weeks: Synthicity's real time transit map: http://maps.synthicity.com/activemaps/ and Aqueduct's World Water Risk Map: http://www.wri.org/our-work/project/aqueduct/aqueduct-atlas I couldn't not mention David Rumsey's entire collection: http://www.davidrumsey.com/

Introduction

I'm a civic artist who loves to clarify the complex by making systems experiential.
