Tam to Pt Reyes and Back

  • October 6, 2013 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We'll be riding about 48 miles, 90% on dirt, and a few single tracks, all of which are bike legal. Elevation gain will be around 10K feet. Depending on the group it can take 6-9 hours. Here's the route on a map and in words:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3437194

* Up Old Railroad Grade to East Peak (fill up water)
* Road down to Mountain Top Trail
* Right on Rock Springs
* Left on Laurel Dell
* Right on Ridgecrest (road)
* Straight to Bolinas Ridge (fire road)
* Left on McCurdy Trail (single track)
* Across the 1 to Southern Pt Reyes (single track)
* Right to Randall trail (fire road)
* Left on Bolinas Ridge (fire road)
* Right down Shafter trail (fire road)
* Up the dam to San Geronimo Ridge (fire road)
* Through Camp Tamarancho (single track, we can hit Endor if we feel up to it)
* A short amount of road riding in Fairfax
* Deer Park to Lake Lagunitas
* Eldridge Grade to Indian Fire Trail
* Blithedale (Roller coaster) Ridge back to start

This not a ride for the casual mountain biker! While I wouldn't drop anyone, I would expect all riders to know how to get home if they need to drop out themselves. Everyone needs to have helmets and any other protective gear (I strongly recommend leg covering through Pt Reyes because it can be quite overgrown. Also, make sure to bring large hydration packs. You can fill up at Mt Tam but afterwards there aren't any refilling stops before Fairfax. Also, clif bars, shots, whatever nutrition you might need is your responsibility. Finally, long rides like this can stretch into the night, so bring lights just in case.

Rain cancels. We will leave at 10:30am sharp. There should be enough parking on Blithedale Ave near the trailhead, although it can get filled up on a Sunday.

And Remember!

Read the rider's responsibility and liability statement below. By RSVP'ing yes to the ride, you agree that you have read it and agree to its terms.

    Good times, y'all, and thanks for organizing Aure. Def a hard ride and a great loop - although lacking in water. Hope to ride with you guys again soon.

    Not everything went according to plan, so here's the route I took on Strava: http://www.strava.com/activities/87469526
    and RideWithGPS: http://ridewithgps.com/trips/1890404
    The Strava link also points to Anders' ride which Matt also followed. Nancy+1 were no shows by 10:40, did you ever show up? Hope to see you next time.

    Sunday's weather looks great and the megaride is ON! Some things to remember to do today:

    * Eat well, you will be burning off lots of calories on Sunday
    * Stay out of the saddle except perhaps to test your bike to make sure it's in good mechanical shape. Lube the chain and check your brakes, at a minimum.
    * Buy nutrition bars to bring on the ride
    * Pack your car tonight so you don't forget to bring essential items like your helmet, gloves, pads, nutrition, water.
    * Pack a spare tube even if you're riding tubeless (I always forget to do this)
    * Consider putting ice cubes in your water bladder so you can have a cold drink (or do what I do and freeze a half filled bladder overnight and fill the remainder with water in the morning)
    * If you are bringing a light, make sure it is charged up fully
    * If you are bringing a GPS, preload the device with the TCX or GPX file available under the export tab on http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3437194

      Finally, if you can't make it or have to chicken out, no harm done, just remember to update your RSVP so we don't wonder what happened to you. I'm excited to ride with you all. We have two Leadville veterans signed up, some excellent bikes being ridden, and a long ride on which to get to know each other, it's going to be awesome.

      My pleasure! I knew it wasn't going to be a popular ride, but I think for a select few it's going to be great.

      I will post shorter rides, this is just what I'll be doing on Sunday, so I thought I'd see if anyone was interested. I'll definitely post shorter (way shorter) rides in the near future.
