Invasive Plant Removal! Receive A Month of Free Hikes with Our Group!

MEMBERS who participate in this Work Day opportunity receive free hikes (regular 2 dollar hikes only, sorry, no free camping trips-grin) with The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group for the next 30 days from the date of the event as a token of my appreciation for helping us take care of some of the trails and areas we frequent! You must let me know you attended the event afterward to receive your month of free hikes.

Invasive Plant Removal

Date: Friday, March 15, 2013

Time: 9:00 am-12:00 pm

Meeting Location:  We will be meeting in the parking lot adjacent to the DeMatha football field. The closest street address is 2916 Nicholson St., Hyattsville, MD 20782. Please click here for a map of our meeting place.

Activity Description: AWS is working to restore a section of streambank along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River! As part of this work, we will be removing invasive, non-native plants to make room for native trees that will be planted later in the spring by local elementary and middle school students. We need your help removing these invasives to give our trees a fighting chance!

Physical Requirements: This work will involve the use of pruners, clippers, and other basic landscaping tools. Lifting, kneeling, bending, and walking will be involved. This work is not appropriate for young children or those with health issues. If you think any of the physical requirements may be an issue for you, please let us know or choose to attend another event.

We worked on clearing out some very entrenched brambles on the left bank of Northwest Branch. Anacostia Watershed Society people gave a good orientation and had all the tools we needed. The work was really HARD and a wake up call on the need to keep natural areas from degrading. Thanks to a bus load of energetic volunteers from the Fulbright program, we got an impressive amount of work done. I recommend that our hikers volunteer with this ongoin, important effort!

Thanks so much for your efforts Bill. I agree that we need to help take care of these special areas and is why I offer an entire month of free hikes to members who volunteer. Incentives never hurt and it is well worth the investment on my part to help someone have one more reason to help out-grin.
