Join Us For a Newbie Friendly and Very Easy 4 Mile Sneaker Hike on The Matthew Henson Trail!

Matthew Henson is a relatively new Maryland state park. It is a greenway along the Turkey Branch, and one of the major tributaries, of Rock Creek. The park takes its name from arctic explorer Matthew Henson.

Matthew Alexander Henson (August 8, 1866 – March 9, 1955) was an African American explorer and associate of Robert Peary on various expeditions, the most famous being a 1909 expedition during which he may have been the first person to reach the Geographic North Pole.

This stream valley park features a 4.3 mile, 8--foot-wide hard surface trail features 0.6 miles of wooden boardwalk. It is surrounded by parkland, forested area, thousands of trees and shrubs and the Turkey Branch Stream.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette . We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing leaving no trace.
