The Great Wall of China!
Yes, the real Great Wall of China.
I am a member of MAHG's leadership team and am looking for 1-3 people to come with me to do a 5 or 7 day trek on this awesome marvel.
What:
I have already located a guide service for us. This is the most extreme-non tourist trek I could find. Please note that we will be hiking 3-5 hours each day so this is not for the beginner hiker.

When:
The plan is to go in late April because on May 1st the airfare goes up considerable. I am open to what exact days is most convenient to others. Also if we want to spend a few days to see the city I am open to that also. Please give me call and we can talk about it.
Cost:
I have estimated the total cost to be around $3000 for the 5 day or $3400 for the 7 day. This includes airfare, visa fees, guide and 2 nights hotel. You will be booking and paying directly for each part.
Travel Documents:
You will need to have a passport and will have to run down to DC to get a visa from the Chinese Embassy.
Please contact me with any questions at all and to discuss the trip if this is something that is of interest to you. Thanks

Have a wonderful trip -- and yes, as Steve says, post lots of photos for us.

Sounds very interesting! However, April is too soon. I've already booked a hiking trip in New Mexico.

On more sober thought, I'm hiking in Sardinia end of May and early June and can't afford both trips. But what a great idea. Wish you all the best on your trip.

This sounds great! You all have a good time. I am a newbie hiker so the pace level and time frame are out of reach for me right now! Thanks for posting.

Wonder whether the visa problem was considered. Every trip we submit extensive papers to the Chinese visa services in DC. Not to mention, the long lines and waits involved. As I said, I'll be in China in first half of August.
As for the Big Wall, does everyone know that climbing and descending may involve stairs of varying heights: from 5 inches to more than two feet! It's not a walk in the park.

This sounds great -- and a bit closer to the Bhutan trek to the Flying Tiger monastery I've been dreaming of! Unfortunately, I can't make the April date given work commitments; need a bit more lead time also.

Hi Glenn, VERY COOL!!! I would be back in Asia during that time frame, there is a high possibility that I might be able to join you.
Did you have a specific route in mind? I am fluent in Chinese so I did some diggings in some Mandarin backpacking websites. The 7-Day "Extreme Odyssey" would highlight the most remote and scenery section of Great Wall, very few tourists but awesome adventure for experienced hikers. Let's keep in touch! I will try to see if I can find some local trail maps/tour books.

Would love to but date won't work. Please let's keep trying to find great opportunities like this. Need a little more advance time.

I keep trying to post a response and it disappears -- so I will try one more time. Glenn, I am very tempted, but need to check my schedule, etc. I have been to Badaling 4 times and on my fifth visit, begged to go to a different part of the wall. I was taken to Mutianyu that time. I also got to Jiayuguan, the westernmost pass. But I've only done short walks on those parts, not hiking. This sounds fascinating. I may call you to find out more.
