Easy 3 with Optional 3.8 Additional Moderate Miles (Total 6.8) in Cromwell Valley Park + Loch Raven Add-On with Optional Post Hike Meal

Hiking just the Cromwell section of this trek makes for a newbie friendly and easy hike. For a more moderate, borderline easy side of strenuous hike, continue past the first 3 miles as we trek over to Loch Raven for a grand total of about 7 miles.

Something for everyone on this jaunt so get up off that couch and stop hibernatin' and join us for good times and camaraderie on the trail!

An opportunity for pleasant hiking within 371- acre Cromwell Valley Park, as well as adding a more strenuous Loch Raven Keep your eyes open for abundant wildlife. It is a stream valley park comprised of pasture, cultivated gardens, open fields, woods, hedgerows, orchards and wooded piedmont hills. There are many species of raptors such as the Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, and Great Horned Owl, which prey on a healthy population of small mammals such as rabbits, deer mice, and meadow voles. Songbird populations include Baltimore Oriole, Bobolink, Eastern Meadowlark, Indigo Bunting, Eastern Bluebird, and many others. Belted Kingfishers and Great Blue Herons are often seen around the stream, Minebank Run.

The valley has been settled since the early 1700s. Some iron ore mining took place in the area with the largest of at least four mines located at the stream's starting point - hence the stream's name. Due to an easily quarried supply of Cockeysville marble, the valley became a production area for agricultural lime. Lime kilns were built, and used to heat the marble by firewood, eventually creating lime powder. The powder was then collected and bagged at the base of the furnace. The lime kilns in the valley operated until the 1920s. The remnants of several of these are still visible in the park today ( see photos ).

Gear Suggestions

Here are some suggestions for what to wear and what not to wear for our hikes.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back so no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group or attend the strenuous hikes! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing leaving no trace.

Fido Is Welcome On This Hike!

Please take the number of the hiker leader(s) just in case!

I was supposed to be on the easy three and at pace option one. They did not have a pace optiion 1 so I hiked most of the time by myself it was more moderate than easy. A lot of uphill climbing. Thank god I have my walking sticks. This group is better suited to experienced, faster hikers. Not new slower hikers such as myself. I'll go with less strenous hike groups until I build my stamina for this group. They are way too fast for me. They do stop to wait for you but as soon as you catch up they take off so you have little time to catch your breath. This was my fourth hike iwth the group. I aways choose the easy, pace option 1 with this group, but I find the hikes to be really moderate and pace 2 or better.

If you are on the wait list and would like to go on the hike, you will get an e-mail as slots are available. It is a “first come first serve” for available slots. Open slots are open to everyone whether on the wait list or not, but the wait list will insure you are notified of open slots as well as letting me know to look for another leader if the hike can handle it. Click here for how to get off the wait list and RSVP “yes”, http://www.midatlantichiking.co... Hope this helps and enjoy the hike. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance as that is what I am here for.

So this will be my first ever hike! Yay! Got my support system (hubby) coming along. Gonna start slow and go easy, so Easy 3 for me only! Also, I clicked on the link above for Gear Suggestions. Got nothing. So can some one tell me what I am expected to have, shoes, and sensible clothing? Thanks!

Is anyone driving in from the DC area? I'd really like to come, but I don't have a car and the trip time via public transit is upwards of three hours. Thanks!
