Multiple Rock Scrambles Appalachian Trail Hike!

Old Forge-Caledonia State Park (Michaux State Forest)

An Easy Side of Strenuous 10.5 Mile Hike

Chimney Rocks is Must See Along with Several Rock Scrambles on This Hike!

Driving Distance from D.C. is only 76 Miles (Closer Than SNP for Those in D.C.) for this Spectacular Hike with Rock Scrambles!

This park-to-park ridgetop hike of 10.5 miles rates as one of the most delightful day hikes in Pennsylvania. Out of the Antietam Cove area, once the extended Blue Ridge, is gained on what is known locally as South Mountain, where there are several excellent views, an unexpected boggy area, and a good half dozen rock outcroppings to scramblethrough before a gradual descent into the valley that holds Conococheague Creek and Caledonia State Park.

Hike Pace
This hike will be at about a 2.5mph pace. Please take this into consideration when signing up for this hike.

Fido is Welcome on this Hike with Leader Approval Due to Multiple Rock Scrambles!

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Please take my number with you just and case and let's have good times and see you on the trail!

I think the title is a bit misleading. I did not scramble anyplace on the hike - there were maybe two places you had to carefully step over a couple of larger rock clusters, but that's about it. And as Bill mentioned, we seemed very focused on getting through to the other side and so didn't do any extra scrambling on the outcroppings that we passed. Having said that, the fact it was misleading was the reason I decided to go, and I am very glad I joined!! Great people!...so it worked out. Thank you.

Excellent group. I definitely thought his hike was more on the moderate side and less on the strenuous side.

The write up stated: "Chimney Rocks is Must See". I am not sure if we saw that. While I did see some stacked rocks that I thought could have been Chimney Rocks, and I was interested in going to explore them, most of the group had been walking so quickly and was way ahead, and the tail end was close behind me, so I passed on the opportunity.

I thought the pace was rather quick. For me, it was exercise with less opportunity to enjoy the scenery, but perhaps I am a slow hiker -- I don't know. Having said that, it was a long hike, and I was happy that it was still daylight when it ended, and it was light for about half of my drive home. So, if the pace had been slower, the hike would have ended later, which would not have been as good. I suppose starting earlier could have resolved that issue.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed getting out on a beautiful day, and I enjoyed the conversations I had with fellow hikers. The group was prompt to begin the shuttle process -- that was good.

It looks like nobody is going to Shady Grove metro, so I won't stop there either. We will swing by Rockville metro at 8:30 to caravan with the group.

If you are on the wait list and would like to go on the hike, you will get an e-mail as slots are available. It is a “first come first serve” for available slots. Open slots are open to everyone whether on the wait list or not, but the wait list will insure you are notified of open slots as well as letting me know to look for another leader if the hike can handle it. Click here for how to get off the wait list and RSVP “yes”, http://www.midatlantichiking.co... Hope this helps and enjoy the hike. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance as that is what I am here for.
