Gunpowder Falls State Park: Wildlands Area! Join Us for An Easy Side of Moderate 5 Mile Hike!
This loop follows the upland forests of the fall zone, crossing a few easy streams (pretty much non-existent in the winter) and visiting a pleasant waterfall, then meanders downstream along Big Gunpowder Falls as it leaves the piedmont. Watching Big Gunpowder Falls sliding through several narrow gorges, it is hard to believe that only 5 miles downstream the falls will spread to a deltalike, broad river more than a mile wide." Pace Options
We break down into groups no larger than 15 hikers per leader/sweep team for a more enjoyable experience for all of us and is better for the environment. Large groups really take away from the hiking experience for everyone on the trail and not just our group. For this particular hike you have 2 to choose from so you can hike with others of a similar pace. Paces should be based on your preference but also please know your limitations.
Pace Option 1: A "walk in the woods" or "social" pace which is great for those who want to soak up the nature and will be about 2.0mph and great for people who take tons of pics.
Pace Option 2: A moderate pace of about 3.0-3.5 mph and the average hiking pace used as a baseline in most hiking books. (most common pace).

Hike Meetup Time is 9:00 a.m .
Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette . We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back and no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.
Fido is Welcome on This Hike!
Please be sure to take a leaders number with you just in case and see you there for good times out on the trail!
Kristopher: [masked]
This was my first hiking meetup! Our leader was knowledgable, and the members were really nice.
December 9
My first hike with the Mid-Atlantic Hikers and I was pleasantly surprised. I was in the slower group, actually last except for Miguel who volunteered to stay in the last spot. Mike, our leader was great. I appreciated Mike & Miguel's team work when we crossed the stream several times. I enjoyed chit chatting with my fellow hiker and am looking forward to my next hike.

Really enjoyable. Our leader Mike is always great and informative. There was a young man with us from Arlington who was so helpful and considerate. Really a very nice group of people. I was glad Mike and Miguel were there though. Some of the stream crossings were difficult for my super short legs.

Kristopher was great, met some really nice people and the trail was good. Great

Im pregnant and though beforehand I was quite a regular hiker, I can never be quite sure how I'll feel, so I guess pace 1.
December 7
It is supposed to be a beautiful day tomorrow. I love winter hiking above all else.
December 7
I will be PACE 1 i guess. Need to take some new pics. Aged and fattened quite a bit. New look. lol.
December 6
Please put your pace preference in your RSVP so we know how many leaders we need. No need to bring all three leader out if everyone wants the moderate pace and if we divide down the middle we still have under our limits of no more than 15 leaders per hikers. Thanks so much and excited for this hike. Especially with the forecast, yay!
