Let's Check out the Frozen Falls! 7.9 Mile Whiteoak Canyon+Cedar Run Loop

Easy Side of Strenuous 7.9 Miles in Whiteoak Canyon-Cedar Run Loop with Natural Waterslides (Seasonal) and Optional Post Hike Meal!

Get out of bed and onto the trail! We CHALLENGE you to get out of bed and enjoy this rare opportunity (hopefully) to see the waterfalls frozen. So, let's keep our fingers crossed and either way it will be an amazingly beautiful hike, frozen or not! In the warmer seasons, this is our natural waterfall hike and a picture from a past trip is our main photo on our home page. We will be passing and viewing, NOT ICE climbing, the many waterfalls, with several very steep descents and ascents. Note that while this is a spectacular hike, it is strenuous and not for inexperienced hikers. Feel free to contact any of the "leadership" team for further information so you can make an informed decision. The numbers are at the bottom of this event listing.

Click here to see pictures from a past trip.

It's hard to keep track of all the falls at Whiteoak Canyon. There are six sequentially numbered falls, starting from the Blue Ridge and ending down at the base of the canyon. Whether or not you correctly number the falls, take this classic Shenandoah hike, for there are not only falls but also canyon views and everywhere-you-look beauty.

Special Winter Gear Note: Unless otherwise noted, and for ALL mountain hikes this time of year, Kahtoola MICROspikes or STABILicers "Original" (or similar traction devices available) are a must in order to hike in the winter with our group for safety and liability reasons! Traction gear/ice cleats come in handy for getting the mail or walking the dog, in addition to any other outdoor activity where there is ice involved! You can run on the ice with them on and many runners do just that!

Does anybody want to carpool from the Takoma/NW DC area?

    February 22

    • Jin

Hi Julia, I watched Norma at KC last night. What a geart perfrmance by the cast including your Clotide. What a rewarding experience to listen Angela Meade to sing the title role Norma. I enjoyed so much!

Kind of a coincidence, but my brother and I had planned to hike together this weekend and he picked the hike(he's not a member of this group). Turns out it is this same hike, except we'll be doing it saturday. Sounds like a good one!

    • David Ludwig

We did the hike today. Yeh, it is a good one. snow in the upper elevations and a little below freezing. Didn't need traction gear but some spots getting close to it. Did you go up Cedar run trail first? Looks like that might be a tougher climb.

      March 2

    • Steve G.

Brian's group went up White Oak first, and I took mine up Cedar Run first. Me personally, I'd rather go up the Cedar Run side than down it. It is a tough climb though.

Apparently someone didn't have a good time, as the rating just dropped suddenly by a whole star.

Pretty please, if you didn't have fun, along with checking the box, could you let us know why, so we can improve? Thanks.

As expected, a great hike with even great hikers!

For all those playing at home, as I expected after speaking to people who'd hiked it in the last two weeks, trail conditions were superb. A patch of ice here and there, but nothing that couldn't be maneuvered around easily. The sun shined, and it was a wonderful day for hiking, couldn't possibly have been better.

I hope you all know, I missed hiking with you all while I was back home last weekend visiting family. You all are like family to me, too. Thanks for hanging out with me today, y'all have no idea how much I really do appreciate you. :)

I meant "even greater hikers". These things really need an edit button.

Also (and apologies for the spam), I shall be driving from near BWI via I95 to Beltway to I66 yadda yadda, and can pick people up along the way, including at Savage MARC and Grovsner Metro (I think I spelled that right). I've already got 1 passenger, can scrunch in two more with relative ease. (I've never ridden in my own back seats, I hear they are quite spacious)

OK Julia, I can be there at 6:50. Let me know if that works for you.

Everybody, I've updated the carpool time from Centreville. Whoa, was it way off! My car may look larger on the inside than on the out, but even I couldn't pull off leaving Savage later than Centreville and arriving at SNP at the same time.

(And please, oh please, tell me somebody gets the bigger on the inside time travel ref)

I have no idea what you're talking about with the car but I can fix it with my screwdriver. It's sonic.

    February 22

  • Steve G.

Hey there everybody. Getting closer to go time, so I stand on the old soapbox for the usual spiel. This is a full hike with a wait list, and no shows will make me sad. I see a couple of folks who don't have the gold star for perfect attendance, so please, I implore you, keep me happy and update your rsvp if your plans change.

    5 · February 17

    • Steve G.

giving this a bump due to the length of the waiting list. Please, don't be a no show.

      2 · February 21

    • Steve G.

If you've signed up guests, and your guests don't show, that's a no-show, too, (still takes up a spot) and makes me equally, if not more, sad.

This will be my first strenuous hike and I look forward to it! I will be leaving from Arlington (close to Ballston) if anyone needs a ride or would like to carpool.

  • Sarah

Obviously this is not for a newbie like me. However, I would love to see something like this. Do you think if I start hiking regularly with you all I could grow into going on strenuous hikes such as this one?

    1 · January 12

    • David

Yes, start on less strenuous hikes and work your way up. It won't take long at all. I did this hike solo last January with no snow and I recall the trail WAS steep and rocky. It was not an easy walk in the woods but the scenery was worth the effort. The description above is pretty accurate.

      2 · January 12

    • Steve G.

Sarah, I agree totally with what David said. I was a couch potato had never really hiked before I joined the MAHG in Dec 2010. Now I lead strenuous hikes. Start with some easier ones, and work your way up. Elevation gain makes a hike more difficult than the distance alone, so look for some flat long distance hikes before trying the tough climbs. I did it, and so can you!

How to Move from the Waitlist to a “Yes” - If you are on the wait list, you will get an e-mail as slots become available. It is a “first come first serve” system for available slots. Slots are open to everyone, whether on the wait list or not. However, being on the wait list will make certain that you are notified when open slots become available as well as letting me know to look for another leader if the trails (and parking) can accommodate it and still comply with our Leave No Trace pledge. Click the following link for how to get off the wait list and RSVP “yes”, http://www.midatlantichiking.co... Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance as that is what I am here for.
