Union Mills! An Easy Side of Strenuous 6 Miles in Carroll County!

Take a rugged hike through rural northern Carroll County,  through steep switchbacks, and pleasant rolling fields. The trail, which is dirt and crushed rock, plunges into a grove of pines. Then it runs along a ridge with a slight rise on the left and a steep plunge on the right. At the top of the hill, it opens up, which gives you a nice vista of woods and fields loaded with goldenrod when in season! This hike is a great adventure!

Note: This is not a hike for new hikers due to how rugged it is. This is considered on the easy side of strenuous not because of the mileage but because of the terrain, switchbacks, and slogging over creeks (springtime and summer). If you are doubt as to whether this is a hike for you or not, please do not hesitate to contact a hike leader(s) so you can make an informed decision.

Hike Meetup Time is 10:00 a.m.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette . We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Fido Is Welcome on this Hike!

Please take the hike leaders number with you just in case!

Hi Mark: Thanks for hanging back with me!! Dad did know Bob Gruel; when I mentioned your full name to him, he said he thought he'd heard your name but didn't know you. Throughout his career there, he was in several departments: first Engineering; then Telemetering; then Data Reduction; then Computer. Hope to see you and your friend on future hikes.

Small group, but I really enjoyed meeting everyone. It was a good hike in the snow.

Hi, I'd like to transition into the more strenous hikes and this sounds like the perfect hike for that. It says that Fido is welcome, but given the terrain, would it really be reasonable to bring my dog with me? Thanks!!!!

    • Kristopher

Depends on your dog. Only you know your dog's abilities and conditioning. Has your dog done similar difficulty and distance hikes before? How did he/she do? If you have any concerns, it is probably better to not bring Fido. Last thing we want is for you to have to carry your dog for the hike.
