A Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area!

An Easy Side of Moderate 6 Mile Hike!

Those who live in Northern Virginia know too well the gridlock of I-95. Yet less than five miles away from the Lorton exit is an oasis called Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area.

This hidden gem is densely populated by numerous species of wildlife, especially birds! "Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area (SMRA) is located on Mason Neck peninsula in Fairfax County, Virginia. There are miles of hiking, including a universally accessible trail to Hidden Pond, two fishing ponds, 800 acres of forest and meadows, bird watching, and plenty of opportunities for picnicking.

The 800-acre Mason Neck peninsula, approximately 18 miles south of Washington, D.C., is also the site of Gunston Hall - historic home of George Mason IV, author of the Virginia Bill of Rights.

Cooperative management of this rural area provides 500 total acres for recreation while still protecting natural resources. Habitat is provided for migratory and resident waterfowl, bald eagle nesting, feeding, and roosting, and enhancement of species diversity for a variety of wildlife, including blue heron, wood ducks, screech owls, bluebirds, and tree frog, so there is a great chance that we will see a bird or two!

Also, interesting to note are that plans are to manage it to provide open space for recreation, environmental education, and wild horse and burro interpretation.

Pace Options
We break down into groups no larger than 15 hikers per leader/sweep team for a more enjoyable experience for all of us and is better for the environment. Large groups really take away from the hiking experience. This also allows us to offer a variety of hike paces and for this particular hike you have 2 to choose from which allows us to be put together with those of a similar pace. The pace you select should be not based on only your preference, but also ability needs to be taken into consideration.

Pace Option 1: A "walk in the woods" or "social" pace which is great for those who want to soak up the nature and/or transitioning to longer hikes and will be about 2.0mph.
Pace Option 2: A moderate pace of about 2.5-3.0 mph (most common pace).

PLEASE put your pace preference in your RSVP so we can plan accordingly!

Hike Meetup time is at 9:00 a.m.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Thanks for keeping me on my toes. I will fix the link right away. You are doing it right, it is just broken. Please give me about half an hour and it will be working again once I get to where I can work on it on the computer rather than this phone-grin.

If you are on the wait list and would like to go on the hike, you will get an e-mail as slots are available. It is a “first come first serve” for available slots. Open slots are open to everyone whether on the wait list or not, but the wait list will insure you are notified of open slots as well as letting me know to look for another leader if the hike can handle it. Click here for how to get off the wait list and RSVP “yes”, http://www.midatlantichiking.co... Hope this helps and enjoy the hike. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance as that is what I am here for.
