Newbie Friendly Sneaker Hike! Let's Hike the # 9 Trolley Line Trail, and Locate Some Artifacts With A Post Hike Meal at Trolley Stop Restaurant
Come and enjoy this social hike and then lunch with your hiking buddies! Take in historic sites with a big dose of nature. After the hike, feel free to enjoy a good meal and shopping in Ellicott City.
This is a great little gem of a trail that starts out in a historic downtown center, but rapidly feels like you are in the wilds of an isolated mountain pass! The area was very rocky, and the trolley line bankrupted the owners due to extensive "cutting" through rocky passes. The result is a meandering little Cooper Branch stream path, remnants of old bridges, all paved and in good condition. This trail starts near the first railroad station in the country - now the B and O Railroad Museum and the Ellicott Mills area in Maryland, and ends near Edmonson Avenue, traveling along Cooper Branch stream and the border of Banneker Park. The first thing you may notice about Number Nine trolley Line (also known as Trolly Line #9) is the boardwalk that curves between the canyons of massive rock. The granite was hand-cut in the 1890s when the electric streetcar rails were built from Ellicott City to Catonsville, and today, these 100-foot walls are a striking gateway to the trail from historic Ellicott City just across the Patapsco River from Oella.
The boardwalk quickly gives way to pavement as the trail winds most gently easy uphill through the woods. On your left, a babbling stream feeding into the Patapsco River provides a peaceful soundtrack to your journey. Tall shade trees keep the trail-and you-cool as you walk through woodlands and occasionally pass homes that border the trail.

This is an easy trek, with some stairs (or you can walk up a dirt hill path) at the start of the trail to the pediment of the old trolley bridge crossing the Patapsco River. The paths are paved or wooden platforms/boardwalk - you could wear hiking boots or sneakers. Total length is about 3 miles round trip with additional mileage for anyone interested in continuing our adventure.
This hike is kid-friendly, dog-friendly, and newbie-friendly! More experienced hikers also welcome for a lighter walk.

The nearby Trolley Stop Restaurant is a nice post hike place to grab a bite to eat following the walk for those interested in some great food and more camaraderie with your fellow hikers, and is near where we are hiking today, yay! We will ask for a show of hands during a break in the hike and give them a ring and let them know how many of us to expect at [masked]. Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which helps to ensure that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.
