Join Us for 8 Miles in Patapsco State Park! An Easy Side of Moderate Trek in the Both The Hilton and Orange Grove Areas of the Park With Lunch On the Trail!

A surprisingly rugged and remote descent into a wooded stream valley to the Patapsco River! The trail provides access to a pristine stream valley, with serene pools and small cascading waterfalls. The valley is decorated with ferns and some sections of mountain laurel. The stream valley canyon is narrow and sometimes dark. The Patapsco River flows through a piedmont stream valley with steep-sided walls. The river descends in elevation through a series of bouldery rapids through hard, erosion-resistant mica schist rock. Near the river’s edge, sycamores, box elder and other floodplain tree species predominate. The vegetation in the floodplain is constantly regrowing and can appear somewhat disturbed due to the river frequently flooding its banks. The steep-sided hills of the river valley are wooded with upland hardwood species including American Beech, tulip poplar, elm, oaks, hickory and ash in the canopy. Mountain laurel, dogwood, witch hazel, spicebush, paw paw and other shrubs comprise the understory. Numerous migratory songbirds and waterfowl frequent the river, the Sawmill Branch stream valley and its riparian habitat. Look for Belted Kingfishers and Great-blue Heron, two common avian species in the riverine habitat. Rainbow and Brown Trout are stocked in the river in the spring, but the higher water temperatures do not sustain them year-round. The rocky nature of part of this hike discourages many from hiking here, creating a pristine environment.

Note: Please remember to pack a lunch to eat on the trail as there will be a lunch stop on this hike!

My GPS says we walked about 8.1 miles, figuring in the fudge factor for my GPS always showing less distance than other newer, more expensive GPS models. That would give us a walking speed of just over 3 MPH or an overall speed (including lunch and rests) of about 2 MPH. If we went 10 miles, the walking pace would be closer to 4 MPH which seems a bit high - I don't think I'm that fast a walker! My GPS says we ascended/descended about 950' but I don't put much faith in that measurement.

Thanks, everyone, for a wonderful day. Even the weather cooperated.

According to my gps tracker, we hiked 10.16 miles and altitude varied by 255 feet. That is not the total up and down, just the range of altitude. Keith, your gps said we did 8 miles? That is a pretty big difference! Since we hiked for 4 hrs and 9 minutes, I would guess that we did more like 10. Here's my track:

I've been wanting to explore Patapsco Park for ages, but I haven't recovered as far as I had hoped from a recent stretch of being sick. Hope to make it to future hikes when I'm back to full health.
