Dear MVFA Meetup Member:

Maryland's General Assembly has been quite busy lately working on bills that both help and hurt animals. Therefore, your help is needed to pass the good bills and defeat the bad ones. Here's what you need to know:

Animal Cruelty (S.B. 21/H.B. 265): GREAT NEWS!! SB 21 passed the Senate unanimously! The fate of the bill now rests in the hands of Chairman Vallario and the House Judiciary Committee. The hearing was last Thursday and it went well. If one of your delegates is on this committee, please call and ask for their support. Click here to find the committee members.

Puppies at Pet Stores (S.B. 505): The Senate Finance committee hearing for this bill is over, and the committee chairman held a work session on the bill about a two weeks ago. We have been working on amendments and will begin talking to the committee members about them this week. If your senator is on this committee, please call and ask for their support. Sunday Hunting: Several Sunday hunting bills have been introduced and many are moving quickly. This is a bad situation for both the animals and the people who like to hike in Maryland on Sundays. If you live in these counties, please contact your legislators to urge them to oppose. Here is the list:

  • HB 245 & S.B. 289 ? would allow turkey hunting on the last Sunday in April and the first Sunday in May in Allegany County. Passed House and Senate.
  • HB 246 ? would allow bow hunting of deer on private property on Sundays in Allegany and Garrett Counties. Passed House.
  • HB 301 ? would allow bow hunting of deer on private property on Sundays in Calvert and St. Mary?s Counties and would allow Sunday hunting of deer on private property during every Sunday of deer firearms season. Awaiting a vote in the House Environmental Matters committee.
  • HB 851 & S.B. 978? would allow bow hunting of deer on private property on specified Sundays in Talbot Count. Awaiting a hearing in House Environmental Matters committee; hearing in Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs committee on 3/23/10.
  • HB 1207 ? would allow bow hunting of deer on private property on Sundays in Calvert; expands allowable Sunday hunting to include crossbow.

Summer Hunting: Please go to our website, www.VoteAnimals.org, for detailed infomation about Gov. O'Malley and DNR's push for bow hunting beginning September 5th.

Montgomery County Trapping (HB 858): This bill has passed the Montgomery County House delegation and had a hearing in the House Environmental Matters Committee on 3/17. If one of your delegates is on this committee, call them and urge them to support this bill. Click here to find the committee members. If you live in Montgomery County, call your senator and ask for their support.

Dangerous dogs (HB 1314): This was a surprise bill! This bill is more expansive than the spay/neuter of dangerous dog bill ? it puts in place more requirements for dogs that have been deemed to be dangerous, including spay/neuter. It has a hearing in House Judiciary committee on 3/18. If one of your delegates is on this committee, please call and ask for their support. Click here to find the committee members.

Tethering (SB 1057): This was also a surprise bill that was just introduced! This prohibits tethering a dog during a snow emergency and between the hours of 10pm and 6am. It has a hearing in the Senate Judicial Proceedings committee on 3/25. If your senator is on that committee, please call and ask for their support. Click here to find the committee members.
