March Meetup: Learn About RDF Triple Stores from BBN/Raytheon & Clark & Parsia

Pizza and Softdrinks will be served at 6:15

Our meetings open for reception and member socializing at 6:00.  We kick off the first speakers around 6:35.  Leave yourself 10 minutes to walk from the parking lot to Building 1.

Semanic Solution Spotlight (15 Mins)

John Hebeler: RDF Triple Stores

John will provide an overview of triple stores to familiarize those that have no prior experience with the technology.

1.) What to consider

2.) Use cases that mandate inclusion of a triple store in your architecture

3.) The do's and don'ts of deploying a triple store.

4.) Resource pointers to open source and commercial product information.

Clark & Parsia (30 Minutes)

Mike Grove, Developer, Stardog

Clark & Parsia is a leading supplier of innovative semantic technologies, with a focus on OWL automated reasoning. C&P are the authors of Pellet, a solution for expressive reasoning and modeling with semantic data. Mike will present Stardog, the forthcoming commercial RDF database from C&P, featuring full OWL2 reasoning capabilities and fast query performance in a lightweight, pure Java implementation

BBN/Raytheon (30 Minutes)

Dave Kolas, Architect, Parliament

BBN, aquired by Ratheon in 2009, has a long history with OWL & RDF that goes back to DARPA's original DAML Projects in the early 90s.  Dave will demonstrate the features of the Parliament triple store and the optimization of the Scout distributed query technology.

Time permitting we may reconvene at a local watering hole for those who chose to carry on discussions.

A little technical for the beginner, but I still got something out of it.

Oops, don't know how to add that I attended, I did, and thought all the presentations were great! Sorry to not get a chance to mingle more, seems like this meetup group is off to a great start.

Enjoyable and interesting talks. I was sorry to have arrived late and not had time to chat with more people.

I found the presentations to be at the right technical depth and helpful.

Interesting talks. Both companies are doing very cool stuff. Asio Scout (BBN) is very similar to a tool set we're developing at Revelytix. Stardog definitely sounds like something we will be able to use in the future.

Thank you to John for his triple store Spotlight. Perfect set up for our speakers. Both presenters did a terrific job explaining the specific capabilities and optimizations their products were designed to address. Great interaction with the speakers. For those interested in Revelytix's Triple Store Evaluation it can be found here:
CLARIFICATION: In the evaluation report the term "Materialization Upon Load" refers to when starting the triple store with inferencing on, you can either stuff the triples back into the triple store of the repository or choose to defer it. This was not critical part of the customer's testing requirements, therefore was not tested.

April Spotlight will be on ontology architecture and development, tools and strategies. PS. Thanks to Emily for bringing "Nate" our 100th member. Thanks from the Organizers to the Membership, we're off to a great start, keep spreading the word and bringing guests.

Great material. Good balance of high level overview and technical deep dive, and between product pitch and instructional content. Good, constructive crowd.

Knowledgeable presenters, good amount of technical depth, good interaction with presenters during questions, good networking opportunities prior to talks.
