The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling

When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…. Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

Looks like I won't be able to make it. Brandon is playing in a golf tournament and won't be back in time. I'm so sad to miss it. I loved the book!

I just kept searching for the book name and up they came. More printed reviews and interviews than videos, but I did enjoy watching her talk about the characters and the writing process on YouTube.

Andree - we will miss you! I was looking forward to hearing your observations on this book. Have spent much of the day on YouTube listening to Rowling's interviews during the publicity tour for the book. It's left me with much to think about. See you next time!

Glad you mention the interviews, Cathy. I must find them on the web! (I am taking the granddaughters to North Carolina to visit the great-grandparents!)

I'll try my best to be there. I'm running a half-marathon that morning and normally spend the rest of the day sleeping and eating. Hopefully I'll be recovered enough to make it.

Who is who in The Casual Vacancy? Referring to this list gave momentum to my reading.

I've been swamped at school and haven't had much time for pleasure reading. I haven't even finished Sweet Tooth yet! I may just come for the good conversation, even if I haven't finished the book. Hopefully with Spring Break coming up I can get it read.

Most likely I will be there, but I'm not 100% positive since I'm doing the HOLI Festival with my son before this.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
