Readers Group Dinner at The Loving Hut

Loving Hut (map)

Selected By: Alison

Please join the Earthsave Readers Group at Vancouver's newest vegan restaurant, The Loving Hut, for a delicious comfort food meal while we discuss Melanie Joy's new book "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism". The Loving Hut offers yummy dishes such as nachos, pizza, Caesar salad, wraps, soup, gyozas, sweet potato fries, rice bowls and veggie burgers, all at very affordable prices. You don't have to have read the book to join in on the food, discussion and fun! Meet some interesting like-minded people and enjoy some social time over tasty food. All are welcome!

The price will vary depending on what you order, but I've indicated $11 as an average for a good-sized meal. In fact, I ate a filling meal for $8 there this week.

About the book:
In her groundbreaking new book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows, Melanie Joy explores the invisible system that shapes our perception of the meat we eat, so that we love some animals and eat others without knowing why. She calls this system carnism. Carnism is the belief system, or ideology, that allows us to selectively choose which animals become our meat, and it is sustained by complex psychological and social mechanisms. Like other "isms" (racism, ageism, etc.), carnism is most harmful when it is unrecognized and unacknowledged. Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows names and explains this phenomenon and offers it up for examination. Unlike the many books that explain why we shouldn’t eat meat, Joy’s book explains why we do eat meat -- and thus how we can make more informed choices as citizens and consumers.

Good food and a good atmosphere for discussion (you can hear each other talking!). A little talk about the book - not too much - but a nice social time in general and I got to meet some new nice people! Yes, I agree the service was slow, but that just gave us more time to talk.

Nice people. Good food. Random service. I was surprised by the seating layout. It didn't facilitate discussion about the book. I was also surprised that I was one of the few who had actually read the book. Especially since it was such a short easy read. Unfortunately it was the same messege in different words I have read in many other books. The idea of awareness could have been covered in chapter one. Chapter two could have been "How to be the change you want see in the food chain". The author seems to be infatuated with her own observations and ignores her readers. It's not surprising the discussion was mute. It was over early. People were already leaving before my food arrived. Noone took charge or even welcomed members of the group. Nice people though.

Nice and quiet - unlike most restaurants - making it painless to carry on conversation. Good food. Service slow - I got the impression they are not well equipped to handle largish groups (we were about 12 - 14?)
