Po Kong dinner for MS Society (only $19.75 inclusive)

  • November 23, 2012 · 7:00 PM

People who attended the last fundraiser said it gave them the warm fuzzies, so we are doing it again, this time for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of BC. Just because we care about non-human animals does not mean we don't care about humans. We support human charities as well, right? Po Kong has given us a special charity price for this dinner so that all proceeds above the cost of the meal can be given to the MS Society.

Multiple Sclerosis is a very common brain illness. Almost all of us have met someone with M.S. since Canada has among the highest prevalence of the disease in the world. People with M.S. don't usually like to talk about it since M.S. is like a ticking time bomb and we never know when the next attack will strike or what damage it will cause. I'd be personally thankful if you'd consider joining us for this dinner. To learn more about M.S., read:

Just as many dishes as last time, this menu is a little different from all other visits, with more emphasis on healthful dishes with more vegetables:

•turnip cakes (not actually turnip, these are daikon)

•Wonton soup

•Deluxe Colourful Mixed Vegetables

•Spicy Green Beans

•Fresh Enoki Mushroom and Spinach Chow Mein

•Tasty (breaded) Shitake Mushrooms

•Bean Curd Skin Rolls in black bean sauce

•Orange Cutlets

•Vegetarian Steak with black pepper sauce

•ginger fried gai lan and yu choy (very high in calcium & vitamins!)

•steamed rice

Thanks for organizing this fundraising dinner at Po Kong. The food was a great variety and delicious, and the company and conversation was very interesting.

Nancy, thank you for giving us an opportunity to learn more about MS. It was good to hear first-hand experiences as well as info. (There is not enough shared knowledge about all the hardships people go through.)

Feeling a lot of regret that when I had the mic I forgot to acknowledge the special charity price that Po Kong offered which made the whole event possible. I think few people could fault their service in any way. All dishes arrived on time, with no one waiting a long time. How many restaurants can we say that about?

Everything was so 'over the top'. The variety of dishes, the presentation, the colors, the tastes, and textures were a delight to the senses and so, so delicious. I loved it all and this is now my favourite restaurant. My least favourite dish was the vegetarian steak. By the time it arrived I was full.

This was my second meetup dinner here and this restaurant is now a favourite. Fantastic food and service and our dinner companions were awesome! (great book reviews, gals! :))I brought a friend who is very timid to try new foods and she raved about it on the way home! Well done once again, organizers and THANK YOU!

Po Kong are experts at fast, flawless service. So grateful for everyone who came out. We raised $252 from passing around the rice bowl! Let us know what your favourite dishes are and which ones we should leave off the menu next time.

I am bringing a friend with MS. She will likely ned to be in her wheelchair. Do you know if the washrooms have a handicapped stall?

    • Nancy

As this is a fundraiser for MS, sadly your friend will not be the only person in attendance with MS who is in a wheelchair. The restaurant tells me no problem for the entrance or washroom for wheelchair access.

hi there, I wish to rvsp/paypall pay, however I need to RSVP with a +1, how come there is no option for this? On another note, thanks so much for doing a pyapall payment option, much preferred over so many cash only events I see posted.

Hi Genny. I cannot figure out why it won't let you RSVP for +1 as there was no guest limit. So, I added a 15 guest per person limit to see if that would fix it, so please try again.

Pay-at-the-dinner is a tough for us; particularly one with a large attendance like this. On average 5-10% no-show at pay-as-you-show dinners. Not saying you would be a no-show, Dusan, but the reality is, it happens. Given the great price the house has given us for this fundraiser, we must be certain of numbers.

When we commit to the attendance numbers, we've committed to buying a number of dinners. If 5 unpaid don't show up, that's $100 to cover. Who? The organizers? The house who has provided dinners at cost? The MS Society?

It is a tough call. On smaller dinners we (who have been organizers of these dine-outs) have been willing to risk it. On a large event, we have to work with a pre-pay system.

That said, if you are attending our other dine-out events and want to pay one of the attending organizers, that may work. I'm not sure how we could get the RSVP side of meet-up to work, and I can only speak of my willingness to do it (Do not want to incur an obligation on anyone else)

I do fully understand how it works, and I wish you would have the full house, see you there. Looks like a great event for always a good cause. My point was, you could have had a choice to pay at the door option and I think you could have more people being interested; forcing the members to pre-pay for the funraising dinner seems a little odd, but it's my feeling, I wish I was wrong. As you explain you might have no other choice?

Looking forward to this. An incredibly priced dinner, no one will leave hungry, that is for certain.
