Introduction

I am a physician-entrepreneur who has experience with start-ups and as an executive in large multi-national corporations.

Are you a healthcare professional? What is your profession?

I am a physician, trained in pediatrics and spent the first part of my career as a Medical Director and policy and program development specialist with the NYC Department of Health. After my career in government, I worked in health policy and healthcare public affairs, and moved to the technology side in the 1990s. In 2000 I joined a clinical decision support start-up that was acquired by Elsevier where I was the VP, Clinical Technology Products and left to form a product design and clinical transformation consultancy where I spent some time working with IBM/Healthlink on physician adoption of EHRs in large integrated delivery networks. I joined an IDN as a VP for a few years and then became the general manager of a large web portal for healthcare professionals. I am currently the Chief Medical Officer for the PDR Network

Are you currently involved or wish to be involved in healthcare innovation? What is your area of interest?

I have started three companies: De-ID Data Corp (www.de-idata.com) which sells software for HIPAA compliant de-identification of unstructured narrative clinical notes and medical records. This company was founded largely to support the growth of text analytics as emerging metrics for clinical, quality and system performance research. Amity Health: (www.amityhealth.com) an incubator for big ideas, with special focus on transferring knowledge and technology from outside healthcare to be applied to healthcare issues and challenges Clinical Performance Solutions (www.clinicalperformancesolutions.com): a company formed in partnership with Soar Technologies to find healthcare applications for cognitive software architectures used by the Department of Deference to create intelligent agents that can model human reasoning.

I believe that medical professionals remain the centerpiece of the success of any healthcare system, but we need to redefine roles, responsibilities, and strategic working principles given the evolution and changes in the ecosystem.
