It is important to step back and remember that Western medicine, otherwise known as biomedicine, or medicine as practiced by the doctors and hospitals to whom most of us entrust our care, is not the methodology of irrefutable scientific thought it is assumed to be, but rather a  system of cultural practices deeply entwined with our concepts of life, death and illness.

 

This group is intended for anyone interested in the subject of 'medicine and culture' and finding new ways  to think and write about illness and the body. While non-Western medicine will be a part of the discussion, this group will focus more on how bio-medicine is culturally influenced within a larger social system.

 

I am not yet sure what form this group will take. I intend for it to be more than a book club, although reading will certainly be a part of what we do. I guess ultimately it will depend on who is involved with the group and what each of us want to gain from it.
