A Bodhisattva is a person who has dedicated his or her life to helping others through developing his/her own mind. By increasing their own happiness, Boddhisattvas learn how to help others to find their happiness. By overcoming their own negative states of mind, Bodhisattvas learn how to help others to outgrow their negativities and bad habits. Finally, by striving continually to increase love and compassion for all living beings, Bodhisattvas learn how to benefit others in many meaningful ways.
Although the word “Bodhisattva” is an ancient one, the practice of the Bodhisattva’s way of life is still alive and well today. By focusing on the three codes that the Bodhisattva lives by — happiness, growth, and benefiting others — we can all transform ourselves into modern-day spiritual practitioners striving to create a better world. It doesn’t matter what our lifestyle is, what our religious background is, or how busy we are: When we live with happiness, growth, and benefiting others as our priorities, we can all make a profound contribution to others.
