Taming the Wild Elephant Mind Workshop

Taming the Wild Elephant Mind:

The Practice of Mindfulness in Every Moment

“With all my effort I should regularly check
That the unsubdued elephant of my mind
Has not broken free,
But remains bound to the great pillar of thinking about Dharma.”
– Shantideva, Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life

In his Guide, the great Indian Buddhist master Shantideva compares the uncontrolled mind to a wild elephant.  Like a wild elephant, when our mind is out of control, it is capable of inflicting great harm upon ourselves and/or upon others.  However, by using the practices of mindfulness and alertness, we can learn to tame our wild elephant mind and thus experience the blissful peace of a well-controlled mind.

During this day course, we will first explore the habits of mind that make our mind feel out of control and dangerous to ourselves and others.  During the second half of the course, we will learn about the practices of mindfulness and alertness, and we will see how these practices lead us to a state of mind that is focused, peaceful, and powerful.
