Big Heart Buddhist Practice

These are drop-in classes. Each week we will explore 1 of 5 topics: Mindfulness; Meditation; Understanding; Precepts and Path. These topics will repeat in a cycle every five weeks. 

These classes are ideal for beginners, and experienced practitioners are welcome to come and share their insights too. Each class will have some brief sitting and/or walking meditation, and the topics will be presented in a discussion type format; with time to address each participant’s questions and interests. 

• Mindfulness in daily life. What is mindfulness? How do we practice it? What are it’s benefits? How do we encourage and remind ourselves to develop this practice?

• Sit (and walk) like a Buddha (or close to it). We will work on finding meditation postures that work for you. We will explore several types of walking meditation. How do we manage discomfort in meditation? We will explore awareness of breathing and consider the relation of our thoughts to meditation.

• Basic Buddhist Teaching. What are the most fundamental Buddhist teachings? We will explore the implications of inter-dependence, impermanence, and the meaning of dharma.

• Buddhist Precepts. Examining our behavior is a natural outcome of mindfulness: waking up to what we do. How do we work with not-killing, right speech, sexuality and intoxicants in our lives? 

• Buddhist Path. What are similarities and differences between different types of Buddhism? What is the meaning of traditional rituals such as bowing? What is a Buddhist teacher and a practice community?

Comfortable clothing recommended.

Cost: $15 per class or $50 for 5 classes. Cash or personal checks only, please.
